They want the poncho for the floaty effect and few superheroes dress purely for practicality.

Whilst those are nice designs, her tunic and leggings are already based on traditional Indian designs, and I don't see these as being that much more suited to the superhero lifestyle. The tunic and top allow maximum flexibility, a degree of modesty and a unique look for a heroine.

"Maximum flexibility, a degree of modesty and a unique look for a heroine" could also be achieved with something based on one of the wrap-front blouses, which is a look that's actually in style right now.

The crossover blouse wouldn't work as well with the poncho IMHO, and I think this other image might help me explain why I think that.



A blouse, with a collar would make the neck area too complicated with two distinctive collars vying for attention. The tunic is lower cut so doesn't distract from it.

I think the blouse would also add a distractingly complex design under the poncho too, which we wouldn't see clearly enough to make it worthwhile for the artist.

But that's just me, of course.

I meant a wraparound blouse instead of a tunic and poncho. You'd get just as much coverage, and it's more aerodynamic.

Ah gotcha.... Generally speaking, I'd say "aerodynamics" has even less relevance to superhero costume design than "practicality" (Edna Mode had a point, much as I love my caped heroes).

If it's a choice between something practical and something striking and pretty to look at, then the latter will often win out, and I can't really feel bad about that.
