The point, from a business standpoint, is to create an event that directly ties into Thor and Cap, seeing as how both have movies coming out soon.

It seems the synopsis is that Odin isn't the true All-father, this Serpent guy is, Red Skull discovered this, Sin releases, and he may be the god of fear. Maybe.

Seems that's being ignored, or a retcon. I believe Fraction said the Serpent was under the World Tree.

...But that's also a contradiction of one of the most basic parts of Norse mythology - the World-Tree has a dragon named Niddhogg at its base, nibbling at the root, and an Eagle in its branches, with a squirrel running in-between to deliver insults to each of them.

How exactly has this Serpent been eluding Niddhogg all this time?
