Girls Like Superheroes, too!

Some of you know I prattle on a bit about women and comics. And every so often someone will try and assert the idea superheroes are for boys rather than, like the hammer of justice, unisexual.

So I started a new site devoted to showing how superheroes are for girls, too. I am filling it with images of younger girls who dress as, meet and just generally love superheroes.

So if you have pictures of yourself as a kid or younger relatives or pics you've taken at a con please submit them. The guidelines for pictures and how to submit are on the site.

And for legality

Good luck! I'd like to contribute, but the only pictures I have of women reading comics are of my mom and my bubbie, both of whom are a bit out of the age group you're looking for. If college girls are cool, I can take some pictures at the next meeting of my comic book club.

That is too cool :D
Aw man, this brings me back to my first and last trick or treat, when I was five and dressed as Batman. They called me Batgirl, but even then I was aware of the differences in the suit and the fact that it was all gray and black told me I was Bat-girl-in-a-Batman costume.

I wanted to dress up as Spidey next Halloween like my brother but he was a lot thinner than me and we never went trick or treating ever again.

And now I suddenly wish I had pictures of me in the Spider-Man pajamas I had as a little girl. But the only pictures of me as a child in pajamas that I can think of were taken at Christmas, and I know the Spider-Man ones were too light-weight to get worn in the winter. I might have one somewhere where I'm wearing that S-shield tee I had in middle school, though... but unfortunately, most of the albums are at my parents' house, on the opposite side of the state. Damn. If you ever open it up to photos of teen and twenty-something women, though, I can take a picture of myself in my Captain America tee.

WIN! I can't believe it hasn't been done before.

Now I know what to do when I go home for Easter; look for our old photo albums, and see if we still have old pics of me dressed as Batgirl (60's tv show version) and Raphael from Ninja Turtles.

Aha! How good of a picture does it need to be? And is probably between 12 and 14 okay for the age? Because it turns out I wore a Superman tee at a summer camp I attended in junior high, so photos exist of it. In one of the pictures, my arm is covering the S-shield, but I've got two group photos where you can see it. But there are about 25 people in the photo, shot class-photo-style, so little superhero-clad me is pretty teeny, like an inch and a half from head to toes.

Hm... Didn't scan as well as I'd hoped (it's not as easy to tell as I wanted that there's a Superman S-shield on my tee, but it's still discernible enough, I suppose). Still, if you can make use of it, feel free. :) I cropped it so it's not displaying the faces of anyone who hasn't given permission for their likeness to be displayed... I was probably thirteen or fourteen, and I believe I was at an engineering camp. Might have been the biotechnology camp. But it wasn't the women in science camp, because there were guys in the picture too before I cropped it...¤t=ScannedImage2.jpg

Uhhh... does it have to be DC?

I might have photos of me and my fellow geeks reading comics, but we're not into DC (I know that you do a DC comics site. I'm cool, no beef, but you know... wouldn't want to step out of turn).

I usually not fond of kids, but that site is adorable! I'll bookmark it. X3

(I particularly like the group picture of Guy Gardener, Supergirl, and Wonder Girl.)

Would Ninja Turtles count as superheroes? I have a few old pictures where I'm dressed up as one.

My niece loves superheroes already (my brother lets her watch a lot of DCAU stuff, plus Teen Titans) and she's even got her own superhero character. XD She dresses up with her princess blanket and crown and runs around shooting her nerf gun at her foes (she has decided that me and the bulldog are both supervillains). It's pretty funny. And awesome.

This makes me wish so hard I had been into superheroes as a kid. I'm definitely keeping an eye on the blog, though, it's an awesome idea! DC Women Kicking Ass is already one of my favourite Tumblrs.

Today was the CASA Superhero Run in Richmond, VA. I didn't take any pictures (no pockets/utility belt on my Catwoman costume), but there were lots of girls and women there, and there might be pictures up on Facebook later.

The sit is adorable. Can we submit pictures of women as superheroes, not just girls? Because I have a picture from this past Halloween as me as Steph!Robin and my friend as Wonder Woman.

And thus the parade of 'Look at me, I'm special because I both enjoy comic books and am in possession of a vagina!' continues on, further making it difficult for women to be seen as- much less treated like- equals within the working comic book industry because some rabid fangirls just want to be treated ~extra~ special.

Keep on shining you crazy, attention starved diamonds, keep on shining.

And every so often someone will try and assert the idea superheroes are for boys rather than, like the hammer of justice, unisexual.

Reminding people that male readers make up the majority of the buying audience is not the same as- Oh, why bother.

Wanting people to acknowledge your existence isn't the same as demanding special treatment.

This site is more than needed. I rant all the time about how the superhero community needs to evolve. I'm starting a webshow devoted to superheroes on Free Comic Book day. I'd love to support your site and give it any publicity I can with your permisson.

Yup, this is the good stuff. Wishing you every success. I'm getting ready to turn 50, I'm out and proud as a DCU fan, and people still give me double takes when I wear my Green Lantern badge to work and ask me why a female would be into comics -- is it because the heroes are so handsome? Well, duh, yeah... but mostly because they live the ideals of selflessness and courage that I most appreciate.
