Oh Hal Jordan, you loveable oaf.

Pie faced?....Say what?! Also, 'Pal' looks like he's gliding or something....

Nope, that's Tom "Pie-Face" Kalmaku, a regular in the GL title for many years as Hal's engineer at Ferris Air. He's originally an Eskimo (Later referenced as Inuit, though I'm not sure what the precise distinction is there beyond one being correct and the other less so) and I believe the nickname came about because of an American foodstuff called an "Eskimo Pie".

Inuit is the largest group among the Native American peoples known as Eskimos. All Inuit are Eskimos but not vice versa.

Eskimo is a larger group, Inuit the larger group (itself with several subgroups) included within the 'Eskimo' umbrella that also includes the Yupik (which also has a few subgroups). Inuit generally get a bit annoyed at being called Eskimo. Yupik, on the other hand, tend to be a touch annoyed at being called Inuit.

Inuit are most common in Canada and Greenland, Yupik in Alaska and eastern Russia.

I think you're being a little generous there. We have eskimo pies in NZ too, and they're delicious, but when an indigenous person is called pie-face it's generally a reference to the round shape of the jaw and flat cheekbones, nose and eye sockets.

Eskimo pies consist of ice cream sandwiched between two cookies, I believe.

Sounds like messy eating, and I can't abide waste of ice-cream OR cookie. Give me a bowl with both of them in there and I'd be happier.

It's tidier than it sounds. The cookie tends to be a bit soft rather than crunchy, so you're not dealing with a lot of crumbs, and the ice cream tends to hold together pretty well.

I have a box of Eskimo Pies in the freezer right now. (Now that I think of it, it's almost surprising that the brand has escaped the reach of political correctness, though of course there are still Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima -- holdovers from the days when white children were instructed not to describe black adult acquaintances as "Sir" or "Ma'am"). Anyways, an Eskimo Pie is similar to a Klondike Bar -- a square of vanilla ice cream, about the size of your palm, enrobed in crunchy chocolate. And tasty enough to make me willing to chew a couple of Lactaid lozenges to be able to eat one.

"Eskimo" is commonly believe to be a name given to colonists by more southerly Algonquin people as their derogatory nickname for the folks up north--"Eaters of Raw Meat." A lot of Inuit folks today are pretty touchy about the moniker, naturally. However, it still sees common use in some places as an umbrella term including Inuit, Yupik, and Aleut people, and there is some dispute about the etymology--according to wiki, it might just mean, like, "people who make snowshoes." So.
In general, it's probably just more safely polite to be more specific, and say Inuit when you mean Inuit and Yupik when you mean Yupik, etc., hence the change.

...why would they choose Blake Lively, born in 1987, to portray the love interest of Ryan Reynolds, born in 1976? There's like a 11 year age difference.....

This is Hal Jordan we're talking about.

It's because originally J.J. Abrams was thinking of having a scene showing Spock's birth, so they needed a younger-looking actress. They ended up not having that scene after all.

Poor, poor Hollywood frat boys. If they so much as think about a woman over the age of 30 their hapless extremities shrivel up and die.

Especially since it's canon (or is it still?) that they were children growing up together.

When Kurt Busiek did "Iron Lantern" for the Amalgam universe, Mr. Kalmaku and Mr. Hogan got merged into one character, an ex-boxer mechanic who said something to the effect of, "If you call me Pieface, I'll split your head open with this wrench."

I love Busiek. :)
