So this week, Doomsday came down on Superboy's head.

What followed ended in the only way it really could have, in between solicits for Reign Of and the characters' power levels.

It wasn't something we weren't all expecting, though- if the Eradicator or the Cyborg couldn't do the trick, what chance would a half-breed with a little extra really have?

Tactile telekinesis, most thought, constituted that little chance- if he could just use it cleverly, he might last more than one page.



In fact, his fight spanned most of the book, minus a talk with Tim and Simon's meeting a very interested Ray Palmer.

(Who seems to be scouting young super-scientists like him both for Ivy University's new 'meta-science' program and to check the growth of mad scientist villainy.. I won't lie, I want to see where that goes.)

The boy and the man's killer raged over San Fran, the latter outmatching the former:



The fist was a hanging implement; Conner's chosen to hit Doomsday with big objects, having figured VERY quickly going blow-for -blow would not be the best of ideas.

Not just cause Doomsday is Doomsday (in fact, our hero thinks, he's even worse!) but because he's become a bit cannier.

A bit more cunning, a quality that the grey one's other prey've recognized.

(Though it doesn't seem to be intelligence; in between this, the Superman/Batman annual's ending, and Action 903's solicit, it's probably just that he's someone's upgraded attack dog.)

They've also recognized their own qualities in him; Steel saw him grow a steel hide, the Eradicator saw him bring familiar energies to bear, and the Cyborg found himself matched in technopathy as well.

So guess what happens:



Yes, it's half the reason I kept an eye out for this..



TTKable Doomsday!

(I do like the speculation that there are multiple Doomsdays, one being sent to each target of the Reign.. it'd certainly explain where Cyborg Doomsday got off to, and make for one heck of a spread in the Reign's conclusion.)

Conner figures the same thing the Reign's other victims did about their attacker:



And takes that little directed blow (it's not the grand sweeping terrain destroyer I was expecting, operatic gestures and all, but it will definitely do) on the chin:



No, Conner, you can't.

He does try, though, filling Doomsday's world with red-hot eye heat.. only for the monstrosity to rather brutally spike him into the end zone, so to speak.

And take him off to the Reign's conclusion at Cornell's hands.

That's some pretty art... I like the fact Kon is less stereotyped beefcake in build, and that face shot in the last panel of the fourth scan is beautiful.

Wow. I HATED the art. For the most part, it's just murky and messy. (Though I think we've had this disagreement as to Conner's build before. Having grown up in Midwest farm country, Conner's beefier build is much more realistic than boyband waif.)

Don't recall dicussing Kon's build before, though it's quite possible.

Conner hasn't really grown up in the Midwest though, he's spent a few months there in total (what with being dead for a while and all).

I'd say he spent a lot longer on Hawaii than he has in Smallville as yet.

I don't think he's at waif level yet, just a less... solid looking.

Yes, but he's a growing boy, and he was on the farm when Jonathan was alive, and now when it's just he and Martha (and Krypto!), all the while with no farm hands and only half Clark's DNA! All that hard work builds a nice physique.

I don't know if Lemire was off in this issue, or whether it was TPTB forcing the crossover limiting his input, but Conner seems to have totally forgotten his recent death during much of his internal monologue. Plus, he notices that Doomsday is different this time around. When had he met him before?

I like the art. It isn't beautiful or anything but it is very nice indeed.

By now, normal clothing should have ripped off completely. Conner.... get a new costume. Really.

The part were Kon is asking himself if this is how Clark felt before he died made me wibble a little.

Now I'm having a mental image of Tim in a spacesuit, breaking into wherever Doomsday took Kon in space, Punching Doomsday to unconsciousness (why is he that strong? power of love!) and then carrying Kon bridal style and taking him away to...Um use your imagination.

Meanwhile Kara, John Henry, Eradicator, are wondering why no one came and Cyborg Superman just wishes he was dead.

If that was the case, I'd prefer it if this Doomsday was a Doomsboy. Just sayin. The again it'll give that particular speculation more weight. I'd prefer it if it was just the one Doomsday with an upgrade. We don't need anymore Doomsdays.

It's not like there isn't precedent for there to be more than one Doomsday. Weren't there a boatload of them during some point in Loeb's Superman/Batman run?

It's awfully convenient that TTK now has a tell-tale of glowing eyes, something it previously never did.

Maybe the glowing eyes weren't about showing the TTK, but to show Doomsday had adapted.

No, Doomsday's always had the ability to adapt from it's defeats, in the past. This just seems like a bit of a step up from that.
