Back when I was spamming the place with Extreme Justice scans, a commenter named as one of several justifiable gripes about EJ the fact that it had Blue Beetle and Captain Atom as coffee-drinking buddies, when prior canon often had them at one another's throats.

In issue #20 (Oct '88) of Captain Atom, which I got for 40p at Kapow last weekend, I think I've found the solution.

We begin our tale at the JLI embassy, where Booster Gold is also seethingly jealous of perplexed by this buddy-buddy dynamic between Cap and Ted.

I like how Scott's body language is all "Truthfully Booster I could not care less."

The nominal plot of the issue has Cap trying to take down a villainous army general who framed him in his origin-story court martial board, and who is now stockpiling super weapons for an evil scheme. To defeat him Cap needs the help of Ted, whose R&D company said villain recently acquired. (Ted was rattling through companies like nobody's business at this point.) Ted is less than keen, to begin with:

Yep. It's what Cap's trying to tell him. And the "covert casebook" is full of charming histories of Cap and Dan's knockabout heroic exploits.

BUT - there is a twist in the tale. See if you can guess what it is from some snippets from the casebook:

Anyone else surprised to learn that it was Dan, rather than Ted, who pioneered the Bug? (Anyone else unconvinced "acquaintance" is spelled that way?) Or how about this:

Something a little... derivative about that dialogue? Well, if you thought it was suspect, you're more astute a reader than Ted, who fails to realize that the entire casebook is, in fact, a total fabrication by Nate, designed to make Ted like him.

But what a fabrication it is:

Yep. Captain Atom essentially *wrote self-insertion fanfic about himself being best pals with Dan* so that Ted would be his friend. And Ted falls for it hook, line, and sinker.

But with Ted on board Cap's able to bring down his villain, save the day, and wind things up with some totally fraudulent buddy-bonding.

Ted, I'd stick with Booster if I were you. You don't see Nate tending Dan's grave until the end of time.

That was indeed.. weird. I don't remember Dan ever being the creator of the Bug for one thing.

Surely Ted must have found out when Captain Atom went public with his past. I wonder if we ever saw any fall out from that, because Nate really should be called on that kind of bullshit.

Exactly - the Bug's like a defining bit of Ted paraphernalia (as far as I've ever known).

I'll admit I'm not well up on Captain Atom continuity - maybe someone here can chime in with more details.

It's actually a bit of a homage, you see Captain Atom's origin was changed after the crisis and that means it got rid of his history and teams up with the Blue Beelte(Ted Kord) so I think this is a homage to the Charlton Comics days.

When Captain Atom was relaunched by DC, they gave him a complex backstory in which he had actually been operating for years before his apparent "debut". A lot of missions that had actually been handled by Sarge Steel, were assigned to Captain Atom's fictional public history, including many where he worked alongside Nightshade.

I guess whenever anyone mentions Dan, Ted gets temporary heart-shaped eyes and goes into a trance for just long enough that you can get anything past him. Villains should've been informed.

Think what Farley Fleeter could have done with this information!

hmm but buying a beer doesn't seem to lead to the instant super-friendship that Captain Atom's does!

I mean that was like instant bromance!

Given the source of that file, I think Ted's just trying to be polite, roll with things, and not insult Nathan's fanfic. Ted know's we've all written cracky little tales that defied canon, so Nate's tale about how Dan used the Beetle...well, Ted's ain't make no waves over that.

As the one who made the comment about Cap and Ted in Extreme Justice, I thought I should explain something about this issue that only got revealed in the next issue: Ted saw through Cap's deception right away. He knew Cap made up this whole story because he knew that Dan Garrett had the ability to fly under his own power, and that he, Ted, was the one who built the bug. Cap didn't know that, however, which is why he made such a seemingly obvious blunder in constructing this lie. The truth is that Ted hated Cap more after this. I've really got to start posting some more Captain Atom scans. I'll have to get on it after I get home from vacation. But thanks for posting this scan.

I don't know if Ted is a troll, exactly. He's playing along with Cap to find out the truth. He's not just trying to provoke a reaction.

Yeah, Ted Kord, Mr. Miracle, and Booster Gold confront Captain Atom about the lie in Captain Atom #26. This is where Ted Kord reveals all along he was aware of the holes in the Dan Garrett story.

Eh, considering they spent six or so pages outlining every single way in which Captain Atom's lies were caught from the beginning of the series up till then, I believe it was quite deliberately planned the whole way.

Aw. Well I suppose that demonstrates the limitations of the "context is for the weak" approach. Thanks for the headsup - I'd love to see some more scans when you get back from your trip.

Is this series worth tracking down generally, would you say? I loved the art here.

I loved this series, so I would definitely say yes. Just so you know, though, the artist on this issue eventually left the series, although he did continue to draw the covers. I didn't like the replacement artist anywhere near as much. But I felt that Bates and Weisman's writing more than made up for it.

Busted.

As if it wasn't skeevy and pathetic enough, putting Dan upside-down and spread-eagle is kind of pervy. Although Bond's situation wasn't much different.

And yet I kind of hate Ted a bit for stringing Nate along if he saw through the ruse right from the start. Why not just cut him off with a "cool story, bro," and move on?

(N.B., I couldn't really hate Ted; I have no objectivity when it comes to that guy :) )

It's a little dishonest of Ted to let him live the lie, I might get mad at Ted after (if?) I see where he's going with it. But the Captain is exploiting Ted's relationship with his dead mentor, so he can't be blamed too much for some overreaction.

One thing's for certain, I won't blame you at all for being 100% subjective on all things Ted. :)
