Some Golden Age Miss Victory

I had a pretty interesting couple of weeks. I visited New York City. I met queenanthai in real life. A whole bunch of other, more personal stuff happened. Personal stuff that I would rather not dwell on anymore. So, in the spirit of escaping from problems that defy easy, superhero-style solutions, I decided to post something I have been meaning to post for a while, but real life kept getting in the way.



s0mnambulance's post about questionable 80s comics inspired me to look back at Miss Victory's original, Golden Age stories. And I discovered that even back in those early years, Miss Victory stories had some rather questionable subtext.

If they ever published a Miss Victory comic, I would by two of every issue. One for me and one for the blond-loving super-villain Doctor Developer, who lives in my imagination.

Golden age comic readers were probably a much more laid back bunch than we are today. The poor colorist would get nitpicked to death over taking such liberties with coloring the Nazi Flag in this day and age.

I must admit, this art does pop, though, doesn't it? It walks that fine line between they had between the comic and superhero genre's pretty nicely.

Golden Age superheroines (Fantomah excepted) were just so darn happy about putting their fists through evildoers' faces. We need more of that.

Things I like about this:

Ella, upon being released, kicks a dude in the face.

Relatively normally proportioned girls. Also, the existence of the phrase "too skinny".

Miss Victory having a freaking ball while tearing stuff up.

For a sec, I got confused and was thinking of Ms. Victory, from the late 1980s. Maybe not much from a literary standpoint, but I think Cynthia Martin did the art, so it looked really good...

They are the same character - or, rather, they were meant to be the same character. Miss Victory is one of public domain Golden Age characters Bill Black adapted for his Femforce title back the 1980s.
