[personal profile] strannik01 posting in [community profile] scans_daily
I had a pretty interesting couple of weeks. I visited New York City. I met [personal profile] queenanthai in real life. A whole bunch of other, more personal stuff happened. Personal stuff that I would rather not dwell on anymore. So, in the spirit of escaping from problems that defy easy, superhero-style solutions, I decided to post something I have been meaning to post for a while, but real life kept getting in the way.

Captain Aero Comics - Miss Victory - Header

[personal profile] s0mnambulance's post about questionable 80s comics inspired me to look back at Miss Victory's original, Golden Age stories. And I discovered that even back in those early years, Miss Victory stories had some rather questionable subtext.

The following story originally appeared in Captain Aero Comics #9. Art by Charles Quinlan, writer unknown.

Pretty sure that sergeant has a hitlerstache.

Also, Golden Age bondage! Complete with stripping! I wonder where Wonder Woman is? She's missing out.

If they ever published a Miss Victory comic, I would by two of every issue. One for me and one for the blond-loving super-villain Doctor Developer, who lives in my imagination.

Who is Dr. Developer? I've seen him reference twice now but google tells me nothing.

The little super-villain who lives in my head, constantly thinking up the best way to imperil Black Canary.

Ella's pretty spry herself, kicking a guy in the throat while still screaming for help.

What say what?

"let's get them kangaroos"?

Golden age comic readers were probably a much more laid back bunch than we are today. The poor colorist would get nitpicked to death over taking such liberties with coloring the Nazi Flag in this day and age.

Looks pretty snappy!

I must admit, this art does pop, though, doesn't it? It walks that fine line between they had between the comic and superhero genre's pretty nicely.

Golden Age superheroines (Fantomah excepted) were just so darn happy about putting their fists through evildoers' faces. We need more of that.

Things I like about this:

Ella, upon being released, kicks a dude in the face.

Relatively normally proportioned girls. Also, the existence of the phrase "too skinny".

Miss Victory having a freaking ball while tearing stuff up.

Motto.

Also, the villains couldn’t compare their freaking hair color to Miss Victory’s!

Yeah, that's the bit that was a bit "Hunh?" There are two girls there, one is blonde, the other isn't... which one is more likely to be the blonde Miss Victory?

But Joan Wayne wears glasses! Miss Victory doesn't wear glasses.

We’re gonna kill you → What is this, a gag?

We’re gonna rip your dress → NO!!

The dress-ripping probably had back then the implied threat of "And then we'll rape you have some fun..."

Cool. I honestly had never heard of this character before. Unless... [furrows brow]

For a sec, I got confused and was thinking of Ms. Victory, from the late 1980s. Maybe not much from a literary standpoint, but I think Cynthia Martin did the art, so it looked really good...
