I never finished the original Vertigo run, so I dunno what happened to the character by the end, but that's never been my understanding. Swamp Thing is tied to the green, born of the green, but he has a consciousness and personality all his own. He's a separate entity. It's like trying to say that Luke Skywalker is the Force (or, say, that Freakazoid is the Internet), just because he's tied to it. Another Jedi being tied to the same Force (as Holland is being tied to the green) does not make that Jedi Luke Skywalker.
