Amazing Spider-Man #659...Oh that CRAZY Carlie Cooper! (spoilers)

Last issue (Amazing Spider-Man #658) Peter's CSI girlfriend, Carlie Cooper, learned that Peter (who is currently off adventuring with his new teammates the Fantastic Four The Future Foundation as Spider-Man) had lied to her about his going out of town on a business trip for Horizon Labs.

So how does she react to this? Well, after one of their roller derby matches, she and her teammates go out for a night on the town to celebrate and drink a little too much booze. And then Carlie gets THIS bright idea:



Yeah, Carlie...I'm sure Peter is going to take this REALLY well.  Things like getting a tattoo of a known super-villain who tried to take over the United States...who also killed Gwen Stacy, the woman your boyfriend hoped to marry someday--the same woman who you were also best friends with when you were kids...who also treated his son, Harry (another one of your friends) like complete crap that's he's still having to deal with those psychological scars ...and that getting this tattoo has become the latest fad amongst convicts, neo-nazis, supremacists, and zealots of all stripes in the greater Marvel Universe is pretty much a guarantee you two WON'T be sleeping together any time soon.

So someone tell me why she's supposed to be Peter's "ideal" and "perfect" girlfriend, who is so "understanding" and "unselfish," again?

Funny thing though--even if she STILL goes through with it...she's still not as bad a girlfriend as Betty Brant.

Ok, what's the story with Brant?

Basically, back in the first stories of Spider-Man, Betty, Peter's first "girlfriend," was insanely jealous, screamed at Peter for even standing near another woman like Liz Allen or Gwen Stacy, while stringing him along while considering a marriage proposal by Need Leeds.

But really, Peter had the least of troubles with Betty--Ned Leeds and Flash Thompson got the hugest load of her crazy.

...wow. I was a Betty fan and Betty/Peter shipper but..damn..kinda..wow..turned me off from that.

Pfft, I wouldn't worry about it. Speaking as another Betty fan, the way Betty was written in the Silver Age -- i.e. like every other love interest -- has very little bearing on her characterization or relationship with Peter as developed since writers started writing female characters as people and not plot devices.

Plus, Betty/Liz/Gwen/MJ et al might have been irrational, flighty airheads, but Peter was a condescending douchebag. Much ... like he is in the post-OMD era, actually. /sigh

Eh, you're right. Gonna ignore the bad characterizations because yea..too unflattering. The Betty Brant I was introduced to was a nice woman, prefer to remember her that way.
