Last issue (Amazing Spider-Man #658) Peter's CSI girlfriend, Carlie Cooper, learned that Peter (who is currently off adventuring with his new teammates the Fantastic Four The Future Foundation as Spider-Man) had lied to her about his going out of town on a business trip for Horizon Labs.

So how does she react to this? Well, after one of their roller derby matches, she and her teammates go out for a night on the town to celebrate and drink a little too much booze. And then Carlie gets THIS bright idea:

Yeah, Carlie...I'm sure Peter is going to take this REALLY well.  Things like getting a tattoo of a known super-villain who tried to take over the United States...who also killed Gwen Stacy, the woman your boyfriend hoped to marry someday--the same woman who you were also best friends with when you were kids...who also treated his son, Harry (another one of your friends) like complete crap that's he's still having to deal with those psychological scars ...and that getting this tattoo has become the latest fad amongst convicts, neo-nazis, supremacists, and zealots of all stripes in the greater Marvel Universe is pretty much a guarantee you two WON'T be sleeping together any time soon.

So someone tell me why she's supposed to be Peter's "ideal" and "perfect" girlfriend, who is so "understanding" and "unselfish," again?

This is the sort of thing I'd really like to see actually get noticed by comics press, but I doubt it will, because no professional comics bloggers ever seem to want to say bad things about Slott or BND.

But this... good lord, Mephisto wouldn't pull this shit. Let's see how she gets totally absolved of blame and forgiven for this innocent little kerfuffle!

Plus, tattoo artists can't work on DRUNK PEOPLE. Bad writing, Slott, assuming you're going through with it.

(Does the comic itself indicate she goes through with it? Or is this just one scene?)

Seriously, nobody acts like this.

Like, even for comics, nobody acts like this.

"Let me get a tattoo of a guy who brutally murdered my best friend, because that will be a super way of getting back at this guy I'm dating, because he used to date that same best friend, before this guy who i'm getting a tattoo of murdered her!"

Well, I saw this coming the second I saw tattoo in a sentence in a Spider-man book. Oy.

They're also not supposed to work on minors. Plenty of your lower rent ink parlors do.

So I suppose this also makes the tattoo parlor business look bad, aside from the bad characterization. Wow, that's like multi-layered bad.

GOD stillanerd, how come you didn't post scans of all those times Carlie DIDNT contemplate tattooing herself with the face of the man who murdered her friend.

I performed this comment as a dramatic reading to Henchgirl, who was across the room. She wants to know if you'd like your Internet in gold or silver.

I guess I'm overly harping on the fact that Osborne murdered Gwen Stacy, when I should also be mentioning the fact that he murdered numerous other people, violently abused Harry Osborne*, has repeatedly and obsessively tried to kill Spider-Man, and tried to make himself the dictator of America.

*Harry of course being another of Carlie's supposed friends. Man she just gives no fucks about anybody, doesn't she.

And Peter ISN'T going to dump this woman like a bad habit after this...because?

Seriously this is bad writing, but it would be even worse writing if he stuck around after this.

Also I think Carly's hair changed again. Did it change again? I thought it was short and brown, now its long brown...or was it long and red...?

"Plus, tattoo artists can't work on DRUNK PEOPLE."

Considering all the stories of people complaining about getting a bad tattoo while shitfaced, some even suing the parlor for it, I don't think there's, like, a literal law.

And I believe it was just the one scene--so it's possible that Slott may be faking us out and next issue will have Carlie waking up with an epic hang-over, her friends telling her she was just about to do that before she said no.

...Yes, I do have my Blue Ring on, why do you ask?

...And the drunkenness is because he...lied about being at work. That one single time.

Were this anywhere close to reality, Dumpsville would probably be heralding the arrival of a new camper-van.

Unless they do some fake-out next issue, this is epic level bad.

Funny thing though--even if she STILL goes through with it...she's still not as bad a girlfriend as Betty Brant.

In fairness to Carlie, this is about as lacking in logic and characterization for her as most of the things Peter has done since OMD are for him.

Good thing they live in the Marvel U. Im sure there's some drunken tattoo removing cream/nanobots available on the market endorsed by Tony Stark and Johnny Storm (RIP).

"And Peter ISN'T going to dump this woman like a bad habit after this...because?"

Because MJ (the woman he still pines for -and vice versa - and who even in-comic they've never actually explained why they still can't be together) tells him Carlie is the best thing since sliced bread? As does everybody else Peter comes into contact with seemingly? And since BND "Let's-Make-A-Deal-Mephisto" Peter seems to have de-evolved to the maturity level of a teenager, he does what people expect of him? There's not that many way to make this "romance" make sense. It's a lot of "tell - but don't show" storytelling going on.

The primary thing (aside from you know, Peter's new "love of his life" getting a drunken tattoo representing his worst enemy) I noticed is that aside from the glasses, Carlie is AGAIN drawn differently than the last time she appeared. Now she has ash-blonde hair? If Marvel doesn't care enough about the character to get just the basics of her appearance straight why should the readers?

I can't even figure out words to express how much I agree with this.

Have the people responsible for this ever been in a real relationship? I mean, Jeepers, there's this thing called trust. And this other thing called talking it out. And this third thing called not being a psycho hose beast.

Speaking as a high school teacher, even teenaged boys wouldn't put up with somebody *that* crazy.

Well, not for long.
