Amazing Spider-Man #659...Oh that CRAZY Carlie Cooper! (spoilers)

Last issue (Amazing Spider-Man #658) Peter's CSI girlfriend, Carlie Cooper, learned that Peter (who is currently off adventuring with his new teammates the Fantastic Four The Future Foundation as Spider-Man) had lied to her about his going out of town on a business trip for Horizon Labs.

So how does she react to this? Well, after one of their roller derby matches, she and her teammates go out for a night on the town to celebrate and drink a little too much booze. And then Carlie gets THIS bright idea:



Yeah, Carlie...I'm sure Peter is going to take this REALLY well.  Things like getting a tattoo of a known super-villain who tried to take over the United States...who also killed Gwen Stacy, the woman your boyfriend hoped to marry someday--the same woman who you were also best friends with when you were kids...who also treated his son, Harry (another one of your friends) like complete crap that's he's still having to deal with those psychological scars ...and that getting this tattoo has become the latest fad amongst convicts, neo-nazis, supremacists, and zealots of all stripes in the greater Marvel Universe is pretty much a guarantee you two WON'T be sleeping together any time soon.

So someone tell me why she's supposed to be Peter's "ideal" and "perfect" girlfriend, who is so "understanding" and "unselfish," again?

This is the sort of thing I'd really like to see actually get noticed by comics press, but I doubt it will, because no professional comics bloggers ever seem to want to say bad things about Slott or BND.

But this... good lord, Mephisto wouldn't pull this shit. Let's see how she gets totally absolved of blame and forgiven for this innocent little kerfuffle!

Seriously this is bad writing, but it would be even worse writing if he stuck around after this.

Also I think Carly's hair changed again. Did it change again? I thought it was short and brown, now its long brown...or was it long and red...?

Funny thing though--even if she STILL goes through with it...she's still not as bad a girlfriend as Betty Brant.

In fairness to Carlie, this is about as lacking in logic and characterization for her as most of the things Peter has done since OMD are for him.

The primary thing (aside from you know, Peter's new "love of his life" getting a drunken tattoo representing his worst enemy) I noticed is that aside from the glasses, Carlie is AGAIN drawn differently than the last time she appeared. Now she has ash-blonde hair? If Marvel doesn't care enough about the character to get just the basics of her appearance straight why should the readers?

At this point, I sort of believe that the writers secretly hate Carlie and are trying to to get fans to hate her by writing her really horribly. (In which case, they would definitely be succeeding.) I just can't believe anyone would seriously believe this was a good idea, even if it does turn out to be a fakeout.

Also, if the artists secretly hate her as well, that would explain the complete lack of consistent character design besides girl with glasses.

Honestly, even considering this is just... awful of her. I've no particular hate on for Carlie (she's honestly too bland, and I even liked her in the roller derby thing), but this is just appalling. She was CHILDHOOD FRIENDS WITH GWEN STACEY!

Even with the drunken behavior excuse, this is going too far. This is not "Hitting on someone who is not interested while drunk" behavior, this is "Torching someone's car while drunk" behavior. It's not excusable.

So...wouldn't this be the equivalent of someone getting a tattoo of Charles Manson? Even drunk, that's pretty idiotic.

Also, if it turns out to be a fake-out, what the hell is the point of even wasting page space on this? Do we really need two pages devoted to a dumb idea that doesn't really happen? Or are the writers going to go super-trite and have her instead get something "romantic" tattooed that shows even more that she's the one true love for the guy that Marvel insists must remain single at all costs?
