Why Blue Beetle Hated Captain Atom, Part 1
May. 1st, 2011 11:36 pmA little while ejne7 posted scans from Captain Atom #20 as a possible explanation of how Ted Kord and Cameron Scott would have reconciled prior to Extreme Justice. I promised in a comment that once I got back from vacation, I would post some scans showing that actually, it was that incident that made Ted hate Cameron more than ever. So here we go with part 1, from Captain Atom #26:

Just a note to explain what's going on in the first two panels: Beetle, Booster, and Scott are tailing Cameron through Washington, while Cameron is tailing an assassin.

So now we have a flashback within a flashback; the fight with Red Tornado happened in Captain Atom 16 and 17.

So as you can see, Ted knew right away that Cameron was lying, but played along so that Cameron wouldn't know that he knew. But you can understand why Ted would be outraged by Cameron lying about Dan.

Just to be clear, by the way, this was one of about a dozen conspiracies going on in this title at any given time. But what do you expect from the creators of David Xanatos?

Anyway, we're going to skip to the end of the issue now. Cameron tails the assassin to an abandoned quarry, where said assassin, known only as the Cambodian, reveals that he knows Cameron by his earlier name of Nathaniel Adam. It's not clear that he knows that Nate is also Captain Atom, a secret Nate is reluctant to reveal, forcing him to fight the Cambodian without his powers. Fortunately, Mr. Miracle has been tailing him, and shows up to rescue him. Of course, that tips Cameron to the fact that Scott has been tailing him.

At the end of the issue, the three conspirators demand the whole story at last, which gets told in the next issue. If there's interest, I'll post scans from the rest of this story-arc, so everyone can see how it all played out. But suffice it to say that Cameron and Ted never really saw eye-to-eye, even after Cameron told him the whole story.
