Date: 2011-05-10 05:26 am (UTC)but wouldn't it be a strong man needing a strong or stronger woman? wondy would be someone he wouldn't be afraid of accidentally hurting. supes and wondy also have alot in common personality wise and are both somewhat a fish out of water

Date: 2011-05-10 02:29 pm (UTC)1) No, a strong man wouldn't need a stronger woman. Sure, it's probably attractive in a purely sexual way, but Supes has never accidentally hurt anyone except when his powers were screwed up, so the idea of "accidentally hurting" is a complete bust. And even so, common powers = compatible? That's it? These are people, they're not so shallow that all they need is similar powers to hook up, nor are they so shallow that they wouldn't accept someone physically weaker than themselves.
2) Supes and Wondy sit exactly on that line where they're too similar to provide a colorful clash of personality, yet come from such completely different background and such different philosophies that they have absolutely nothing in common. Sure, they make good friends, but how could they possibly live together? Clark is a farmboy-turned-big city reporter. Diana is an Amazonian princess with a mythological culture. Who's going to abandon their entire origin, identity, home base and supporting cast to live with the other? Clark? Diana? Both, becoming some icky god and goddess lording it over humans? Neither Clark nor Diana would be willing to abandon Metropolis or Themyscira.
3) Supes is not a fish out of water. At all. He has no memories of Krypton, has grown up around humans since he was a newborn, didn't know he was an alien until he was a teenager, and has always thought of himself as human. Sure, the Pre-Crisis version of him was more alien than human, but he hasn't been that way at all since 1986. Diana IS a fish out of water in "man's world", but again she's not alone (well, wasn't for years, until certain recent retcons, but since I'm talking about her long-established personality here...) - she's got all the Amazons and their society to go back to when she's not superheroing, so she wouldn't exactly be lonely and looking for companionship anyway.
....um....sorry about the uber-long rant. My pet peeves tend to be very detailed ;)

Date: 2011-05-10 10:16 pm (UTC)1. Intercourse is a major part of an intimate relationship, I don't think it's shallow to say that similar powers (as you put it) would allow Superman to perhaps have better sex. I would think it to be stressful during intercourse to be constantly worrying about your powers, with the human body being so fragile. It's not a matter of just finding someone who is powerful enough to withstand full intercourse with Superman, there's been several individuals who he's met that have been willing to accommodate him including Obsession and Maxima. Other things have to be in place between supes and wondy which leads me to...
2. Neither of them would have abandon Metropolis or Themyscria, we're talking about two beings that can travel the world in less than a day. Not only that, Wonder Woman rarely LIVES on Themyscria and superman frequents both Smallville and Metropolis. As for clashing of personality or lack thereof, Supes and Wondy maintain probably one of the strongest "platonic" relationships in comics. They often go to each other for advice, and frequently disagree in day-to-day ethics
3. Learning that he is a alien changed Clark's outlook on life completely. As Bill said in Kill Bill "Clark Kent is the actual disguise", Superman wears his glasses to disguise himself as Clark Kent. Similarly Wonder Woman disguises herself as Diana Prince.
If Superman doesn't feel like a fish out of water, why does he have a "fortress of solitude"? I think its more than to keep all his stuff XD
And one last thing, just like how you DESPISE when writers and fans try to ship Superman and Wondy, I absolutely DESPISE when writers go out of their way to PROVE that they could never be together.
I can't remember the storyarc or issue but I seem to remember a time where supes and wondy were stuck together for a hundred years and nothing happened because of supes devotion to Lois.
...I hated that story.

Date: 2011-05-11 12:29 am (UTC)As for the other points...well, you say those are valid arguments, I vehemently disagree. Eh, difference in opinion.
Why'd you hate that story? The plot was kind of stupid, but the devotion part was touching.

Date: 2011-05-11 02:05 am (UTC)Superman:birthright in 2003 somewhat reverses a bit of Man of Steel by making Clark bumbling again. This was because she thought Clark's human persona needed to be distracting.
Learning he was Kal-el and discovering his powers changed everything to Kal. He learned that he must keep his true identity (that of the kryptionian Kal-el) secret by adopting a full human persona, the one given to him by his adoptive parents. But even this persona could not work so Ma and Pa had to adapt the Clark Kent persona in order to hide Kal's true identity by illusion (such as glasses to hide his bright eyes and a slouch to hide his physique).
Here's a simple way of viewing my position on the matter: Superman goes to bed Superman and wakes up Superman.
By wearing glasses, a suit and prohibiting his powers he adopts the persona of Clark Kent.
I think I might have to make a post about this....crap this means I have to find and scan superman comics... dammit
I found the issue btw, it was Action Comics #761 here's a synopsis
"In the famous Action comic #761 Superman and Wonder Woman spend a thousand years in Asgard. Throughout this time, they have grown closer together and have no idea if they will ever be able to return. Over this time he has started to forget Lois. The last night before they're final battle, they have one last chance to sleep together. But like the boy scout he is, he turn down the opportunity."
Why do I hate this? because it's contrived. The writer wanted to establish this pairing wouldn't happen so he made a ridiculous story about them spending a HUNDRED YEARS in another dimension.
A HUNDRED YEARS.
Within the story Superman actually FORGOT who Lois is. So now we have our main hero who apparently aged 100 years for absolutely NOTHING. All this did is finalize the Superman-Wonderwoman debate by saying "look in 761 they spent a hundred years together and didn't do it, so it can never happen without it looking silly"
bah

Date: 2011-05-11 04:12 am (UTC)Now of course, with a character like Superman, who goes through dozens of different writers and pops up as a minor character in loads of non-Superman titles, of course there'll be some writers who didn't do the research and imply that Clark Kent is just a disguise, so I'm not denying you can totally find scans from comics that will support the alternate theory, but any slip-ups like that will be outnumbered ten to one by other canon instances of Clark mentioning how Clark is the original guy. This conflicting canon is just a side effect of the way comics are written in the present day — it's a phenomenon Tv Tropes calls "Running The Asylum", in which canon becomes indistinguishable from fan fiction.
As for the story: Clark didn't forget who Lois was. He forgot her last name or something, but he never forgot her. And he was tempted to sleep with Diana, but he held back because he still remembered Lois, so it wasn't really saying "lol Supes/Wondy is dumb" as much as "Supes really loves Lois". I'm not sure if that comic has been posted on this site or not, but I'm sure I've got a scanned copy of it on some thumb drive here. (I do agree that that comic was kind of stupid and pointless though).
