When he does stuff like this (poking fun at himself with the whole "everyone will know BW is Batman" thing or in a round-about-way with the whole dumb - IMO - Hush masquerading as Bruce storyline) I really like Morrison.

And I was really betting that the first scans from this issue posted would be of "BlackBat" - probably my happiest surprise from DC of the year - especially coming from Morrison who's never seemed to be at all interested in using the alter ego of "BlackBat".

Hush masquerading as Bruce was alllll Paul Dini's idea. It happened to fit with Morrison's story (i.e., no-one would be asking where crazy ol' Bruce Wayne had disappeared), so you could read Batman & Robin and/or Dini's book and they wouldn't hugely contradict each other.

But, yeah. Very stupid idea, I thought.

Hey, my point in the last thread was that if you're going to use for-profit vs non-profit to consider something imperialistic or not, it should be because an enterprise is trying to establish economic dominance over other nations. Here, people are seeing what's going on and saying, 'wow, this company is cool, I want to own a part of it!" It's not like Batman Inc. is making a profit off the nations it helps.

For what it's worth, Pennyworth is the correct term of address for an English butler. It would actually be very rude to call him Alfred in a stately English home. That's for footmen etc. Obviously Bruce, Dick et al do things the American way, but I don't find it a stretch that the al-Ghuls go European.

I'm not sure it's an American thing, but I think it's actually everyone having dropped the formal gentleman's gentleman agreement in favor of full family-member status. Of course, for Alfred, reciprocating would be unthinkably improper and quite out of the question.

As for Tantrum Boy al Ghul, I would give you the benefit of the doubt if the rest of his interactions with Alfred were anything but completely elitist and condescending. It comes across to me as his rejection of everyone else's reverence.

Then I would think of new, acceptable ways to dump my rage on Damian al Ghul. Jason Todd may or may not have dropped an extra-vile drug dealer 40 stories, but he didn't get the benefit of the doubt. Damian al Ghul has deliberately killed many times, and it's "Come on in and pet the kittens! Aw, he's being snide again, isn't he the cute when he sneers out those veiled insults?"

And my hate surprises me, because I'm a loser, not a fighter. Hmm, typo sense is tingling, but spell-check says everything is fine. Must be accurate.

Well, I'm not sure about that. My shaky memory is from an s_d post years ago, sometime before he almost killed Tim. I think he was arguing against the "outdated" Bat policy on not killing, and I got the implication stuck in my mind that he had already undertaken several assassinations around the world before arriving in Gotham. Even if I am remembering it correctly, I imagine it could have been Damian bragging and stretching the truth.

It's the Spook and an attempt on Tim (we also see him really wounded after a fight in Batman 665 but it's not shown whether he killed people. And he mentions how we [the LoA] kill our enemies). And while that is horrible, there's still the fact that Damian is ten kinds of misguided and low on interpersonal skills and indoctrinated (he actually thinks it'll get him closer to Bruce. That's idiotic but he really doesn't know better). And don't ignore the fact that he's 10. You might think that's an excuse, but children really do have a different way of looking at death and the world (which changes around Damian's age), and combining that with a LoA training is pretty much a recipe for being horrific. Though I have to admit that things like "WHY CAN'T I GET A LAPTOP?!" and "Mother, I want a Batmobile." were pretty hilarious to me.

And I understand that Damian isn't for everyone, and if you don't want to like him, that's okay. I just feel like there's plenty of evidence that he really does respect and like Dick and likes some other people too (not many, but Damian's an ongoing process). :)
