Some things are too unfunny for even Deadpool to make jokes about

I once mentioned in the comments about Deadpool having been raped, and I had a couple of puzzled reactions in answer by people who didn't remember it. So I thought I could do a post about it:

That was back in Joe Kelly's glorious run, and Deadpool was going through a rough time with trying to help Typhoid Mary which didn't really turn out how he wanted and then turned out a little bit ugly, fighting T-Ray who had a big grudge against him, and LL&L expecting him to be the heroic Mithra who will protect a prophesied Messiah, which he thought was pretty absurd; so he did something he was prone to do back then: going to Siryn, with whom he had a weird romantic friendship and a very big crush, for comfort. Instead of finding Siryn, he found Warpath, and a fight ensued, with the result that when Siryn actually arrived on the scene she was not really in the mood of hearing Wade talk about his issues and they had a pretty bad argument (including Wade being overbearing and aggressive) and Siryn walked away.

So Deadpool got drunk.

Spoiler alert : this isn't really Siryn.

And that was pretty much the last time the whole event was mentioned. Soon after, Deadpool found out that his friend Weasel and his prisoner/vitriolic mother figure were actually spending time together at his flat unbeknownst to him and reacted by putting them into the torture room. I believe that was also the last we saw Typhoid Mary on Deadpool.

Yeah, I thought it was interesting. It was treated seriously, in terms of Wade having real emotional distress. Although at the same time there were no follow through and no one actually goes out and call it rape (though the idea that it was is definitely there in the Wade's reaction as well as in the situation).

I always liked this story, but I hate how they never followed up on it. He hasn't seen Typhoid since. It's like with Sabertooth. The guy killed his girlfriend and pretty much got a free pass.

Poor Deadpool has gotten his fair share of dropped plot threads, but this is one that I really wished they had followed up on.

They did? The only time I know of was in X-Factor back when Siryn was... going through issues after she lost her child? And that... was hardly the most romantic sex Wade ever got.

I'm glad this was handled so realistically, and honestly I think things like this should be talked about, so I like that the writer chose to do a plot line like this. I'm not sure what they really could have done to continue this plot line though... realistically, it's quite possible he'd just avoid her from this point out and not talk about it. Since she never showed up again, I guess it was handled as expected.

I actually almost posted these issues here myself way back after the whole kerfuffle over those Spider-man issues where the Chameleon basically rapes Peter's roommate while impersonating him and the fallout was played for laughs. Even though this is such an old issue now I found it fascinating that we'd seem the same issue handled so much more seriously in a Deadpool book, of all places. So much <3<3<3 for Kelly's Deadpool run.

IIRC, we did see Typhoid one last time in a later issue, gloating with T-Ray over their joint success at screwing Deadpool up. That was after Deadpool had lost his fight with T-Ray and been left buried in the snow, and was pretty much the lowest point he got to before things started picking up for him again (sort of, anyhow). From then on I guess he was kept too busy with other plot stuff for the issue to come up again or be dealt with - though now that I think of it, I do remember hearing that Joe Kelly was forever being told the series was on the verge of cancellation and that he had to wrap up all his plot threads ASAP during this run, so I wonder if we would have seen more fallout from it otherwise.

Very mature handling, very seriously and nastily done too, as it should be. I can recall other female-on-male rapes in comics that were treated seriously, but this had probably the most visceral and realistic reaction I've seen. I suppose that kinda makes up for the lack of proper follow-up. Which irritatingly always happens, like it's okay for guys to be horrified and angry, but having acknowledged lingering trauma or talking about it explicitly with someone makes them weak. (Hello there, Nightwing, lookin' at you.)

I'm just not seeing Deadpool's appeal, I guess. He just seems like the worst of the 90s excesses. Every time someone tells me how wonderful the Kelly run was or what a fun character he is...I guess he's just not to my taste, because I've never seen anything that great. This isn't bad by any sense, but it's not great either, IMHO.

I mean, yes, it shows a man being taken advantage of by a woman and that the man feels violated; I get that. And I realize that comics handling this topic in any meaningful way is a rarity...but this just rings kind of hollow. Especially as the dialogue on the last page or so is writing checks the character can't cash ("Something...PERMANENT, Al."...dude, this is comics, that word doesn't apply to anything, ever).
