Five-ten years down the road, this'll be an amusing bit of minutae, won't it?
May. 16th, 2011 01:49 pmYou remember the Imposter arc that kicked off last August in Detective Comics, right?
Well, around that time, some people picked up on UK retailer listings indicating that one Gotham City Imposters was due for a January release, PS3/360/PC.
It's what leading me to wonder if today's announcement, courtesy of a presser from WB Interactive, is creatively linked in any way..
Not to worry, though, the Bat and the clown're nowhere near it yet, as per the presser.
Instead, it's a cast of !Bats and secondhand jokes gunning away at each other, with "insane costumes" (over the years, then, with a few paint jobs?), "homebrewed gadgets" (customization, or just an aesthetic? Either way, there's a few people'll want..), and "a wide range of.. weapons" (probably pretty standard; crowbar or baseball bat's almost a given, I think).
Oh, and of course, "maps and modes" inspired by the license.. Arkham's almost a given for the former, and the latter's probably just standard CTF/Deathmatch stuff with the appropriate flavor text.
Whatever it is, at least the aesthetic looks a bit sufficiently serious, and it's being developed by Monolith (some think FEAR, I think Shogo.. I don't know why.) so a pretty good experience supported by the IP is guaranteed. A little more info's no doubt forthcoming soon enough, and the inevitable trailer's sure to be reminiscent of TDK..
For legality, the best part of "Marc Guggenheim explains Batman as superhero" from Confidential, !Silver Age Lex Luthor:

This is probably what you'd get with a heroic Lex, isn't it?

Date: 2011-05-16 07:11 pm (UTC)Answer? Money, lots and lots of comic fan money.
It's probably way too early to call anything, but this looks like a cash-in. It may not be a bad game, but it's almost assured not to contribute to the IP or mythos in any meaningful way like Arkham Asylum did.

Like Brink but with Batman labeling slapped on it.

Date: 2011-05-16 09:20 pm (UTC)Something interesting might come out of it, but I doubt Alan is that much invested in the videogame medium to know its strengths and weaknesses and that we'll end up with the classical error of a story with no interconnection with the medium. A shame because something of his wacky nature could do wonders for the videogame industry if only allowed a seamless integration into a game.
