IGN has the update from Marvel's press call about the changes coming up for Ghost Rider.

Marvel Comics held a press call earlier today with newly exclusive writer Rob Williams to talk about his latest undertaking: the new Ghost Rider ongoing series that was announced back at C2E2. There wasn't a ton of new information revealed, save for one pretty big bombshell: when Johnny Blaze gives up the Spirit of Vengeance, its next bearer will be a woman.


That's right, boys and girls, and those in-between, the new Spirit of Vengeance will be a biker.
Reading further down, it's someone who has trained for it, but someone brand new.



Nothing new under the sun this summer. But at least the packaging will get a fresh coat. The comic is supposed to have a "grindhouse" type feel to it.

Oh boy.

I don't know whether it's an intriguing idea, or, when you consider that, as a skeleton, she'll be indistinguishable from the male Ghost Riders; no boobs and no feminine features (unless she has very small hand bones or something) just be very confusing.

And finally, the burning question was asked of Matt Clark regarding how one portrays a female Ghost Rider when the character is just a flaming skull.

Thats what I'm waiting for the artists to forget. You can tell shes female from her bone structure, wider hips, narrower shoulders, and such, but I'm just waiting for a lazy writer to throw boobs on her. Then I can get pissed and be like "That's not how anatomy works."

Didn't artists already have a habit of drawing Ghost Riders as if they still had flesh underneath all the covered parts anyways? Blaze and Ketch almost always kept their body shapes under their clothes, so why wouldn't the new Rider do so?

I don't know about this. I thought the whole reason Ghost Rider was so good is the dynamic he had with Johnny, and its the only thing that kept him in check. Ghost Rider is one of the the most powerful heroes in Marvel, and his only limiting factor was his human side. So if his human side refuses to limit, how exactly is this going to work?

On the plus side, ghost rider woman!

That's...a very creepy image. Now I'm wondering how that'd work. I'm sure there's an alien race out there who protects their mammary glands with bone...would it be like mini-ribcages, or solid plates attached to the chest...? My imagination is strange.

I dunno. I might be giving artists too much credit, but I think it's fairly easy to make her skull-face look female — narrower cheeks, slimmer jaw, smaller upper lip area, wider eyes, less prominent brow, etc. And same goes for her body. You can convey a feminine form without distinctive female characteristics. And if you're worried people won't tell the difference, give her some exaggerations like wider-than-usual hips and manipulate the shadows cast by the bony parts of her skull to give it the impression of a more feminine facial expression. These things only take a bit of thought.

I'm surprised no one has remembered this, which gives an obvious idea what a female Ghost Rider would look like.

Actually, I was gonna say something about this. Interestingly, I remember... I think it was the Caretaker saying that Dan wasn't even supposed to be the Ghost Rider. It was supposed to be Barbara from the beginning.

At least, I'm gonna give it a try.

I think Ghost Rider has that kind of fun/cool/silly combination that I love in Booster Gold, and the thought of a LADY Ghost Rider? It's like Marvel is just outright asking me to buy this.

Hopefully it won't suck.

We're supposed to believe the Spirit of Vengeance rides a pi$$y little Honda Nighthawk 750? And what's with that 70's-style windscreen? Y'know, the one that is clearly too big for the bike?
