It's considered pretty offensive in trans community, actually--it's mostly used only in (fairly exploitative) porn or with bitter irony. Outside of those contexts, it's widely considered a nasty slur.

Just so you know for the future, to trans people this is about as loaded as a land mine, and about as pleasant. You're fortunate that you've never had to think about it until now, so if you start avoiding (as I assume you avoid other sexual or racial slurs) it you should be fine.
