A Dream Fulfilled

Four scans from Fear Itself #3, and one from Fear Itself #1.


The first issue of the latest event saw Sin, the daughter of the Red Skull, locate one of the zillion mystical artifacts of the Marvel Universe, in this case a magic hammer that will grant a worthy the right to the power of Skadi:



She does, and is merged with Skadi.  She sets a bunch of bad things in motion, and, as of last issue, leads an attack on Washington.  New Cap, Black Widow, and Falcon (as well as Shang Chi, of all people) are there.  Fighting ensues:



Bucky hits her with the shield, which really pisses her off:





Given that this is a mystical event, that Ed Brubaker's various titles don't appear to be involved with this in any way, and that they're apparently doing a Captain America and Bucky title (unless that's all flashbacks), I think it's highly unlikely this is meant to last.  All the same, heroic.  Also, the fact that they had Sin announce what she was going to do that far in advance (and that she's similarly prophesied the death of Thor here) weighs against it.

Yeah, I seem to remember hearing that it was all WWII stuff.

Anyway...yeah, that's a pretty solid way of going out, whether it sticks with this event or not. I love that "What? You wanna grow old and retire?" line--definitely sounds like something a Cap would say to inspire the troops to charge.

I dunno this happened to Dick in IC and he came out fine, I'm not calling Bucky dead until they show a funeral or someone proclaims him dead.

Going from the last issue of Captain America: Reborn, Bucky's just going to go back to the Winter Soldier identity while Steve reclaims the mask.

third scan (page) - what is that figure flying off into the distance, in the panel after she rips his arm off?

Um... you mean Bucky? His legs are vertically above each other in the picture, it took me a minute to work out the pose.

that's what I thought too, but in the next panel, she's standing over him. Unless that's on a following page, and we missed a bit in between.

The figure flying away seems to be wearing a red glove on one arm and the other arm isn't there, so it does seem to be him. Sin's also in a throwing pose. But it is odd she's right back with him next panel.

I've been waiting for this. They did it pretty well.

Marvel's told the rest of Bucky's story now. He can be put to rest again, and Steve can take his place as the larger-than-life role model of the superhuman community with his blue cowl.

We'll still have "Captain America and Bucky" stories set in WWII for a while to continue celebrating the awesomeness of Barnes, anyway.
