MASSIVE SPOILERS for Onslaught Unleashed #4 and Fear Itself #3



Rikki "Bucky" Barnes.
James "Bucky" Barnes.

With my previous post about Onslaught Unleashed #4, I can only upload one more image. At piece with who she is and what she has become, Nomad makes the big sacrifice to stop Onslaught being remerging from her.



Her kindred spirit from another universe, James Buchanan, the current Captain America, holds the line at Washington D.C. against Skaldi and her Nazi mecha forces in Fear Itself #3.






Both characters rose above their sidekicks role to Steve and became their own fleshed-out individuals, able to step out on their own and lead through example. And I for one, am grateful to have been able to be introduced to them.

Marvel's Egyptian god Seth has been doing it for thousands of years and so far hasn't faced any reprisals for it. Either it doesn't harsh Set's mellow that much, or his perception of time is so long-view that he hasn't bothered to do anything about it yet.

I'm a bit disappointed that it seems to be some never-before-seen Norse god behind all this rather than Set. At least if it were the latter rising I could see Odin being all "nice planet; too bad we have to leave right now!" about it.

Well as someone who's maintained that the cyborg-ninja Bucky-Cap was a terrible idea, talk about a Liefeldian concept, I'm actually glad to see that character dead. Yeah I doubt it will stick, probably not even one issue. But for now let me dream while I stand up and applause.

For cripes sake, why couldn't this have occured in, say, Brubaker's Captain America, instead? That book was mostly self-contained. Key word being "mostly" since events like Civil War and Dark Reign affected it, but you didn't necessarily HAVE to read them to enjoy the story.

We saw Bucky return and become Cap in that one title. Why the hell couldn't they put his fall in the same book, too?

Also didn't Odin say "The Serpent will kill the God of Storms" and now Sin is reffering to Sadi as "Killer of The God of Storms" well Thor is going to die now isn't he? And since he most likely will come back I'm going to say that so will Bucky, yeah so I'm sticking to that.

As sad and cheap as I feel about Rikki Barnes' fate, I really have to take my hat off to Mr. Brubaker and give him a big standing ovation. "Bucky stays dead" was inviolate at Marvel for over four decades, and for good reason.....his loss defined a lot of who Steve Rogers was. 1977′s “What If” #5 was a story that posited Bucky succeeded Cap, and died tragically. When the whole "Winter Soldier" storyline brought Bucky back, I rolled my eyes; later when Bucky took up Cap's shield, we all knew Steve would be back eventually, but Brubaker drew me in every step of the way with what became what may be the best revival of a "dead" comic character ever. James Barnes was a three-dimensional, living, breathing character I grew to care about....I mourn his death, but by pulling him into the 21st century and breathing new life into him, he has only added additional gravitas to the Captain America mythos. I fell like I have when a friend dies too young....heartsick, angry, but grateful to have known them in the first place.

Damn, just when i was finally beginning to like Bucky in his role as Cap, and i already liked Rikki, this?! I've despised the whole Red Skull's daughter crap from the start, but this gives me whole new reasons to hate her. I hope she's a smoking corpse after this.

Let me say this. I may be in the minority on this but I do not want Steve to be Captain America again. I get tired of moves like this being made because a fuckin movie is coming out. Yes I really want to see the Captain America movie. Comic wise? No I don't want Steve weilding the shield again. I thought Bucky filled the role nicely and I liked Steve being the Super Soldier/Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. it was a welcome stat quo that I hoped stick. Welp, say goodbye to that dream. And seriously....they killed Rikki....just...come on!

I see that Marvel is going to turn the current Cap book into Captain America and Bucky, to which honestly I was reaaaally hoping it would be about a partnership between Rikki and Bucky as opposed to Bucky and Steve in World War 2.

I get it Marvel. Movies, t.v. shows, etc might attract new readers but I gotta be honest..if they pick up a Captain America book to find that it's not Steve weilding the shield, well tough fuckin shit, they can go pick up an older book, use wikipedia, wtfe, I'm just tired of this.

My attitude is just the opposite. I really dislike the concept of legacy heroes. Captain America isn't the costume, it's Steve Rogers in the costume. Otherwise, it's like the old Seinfeld joke about how a fan can love a player on his favorite team one day, then that player'll get traded and the same fan will hate him, so he's really just cheering for the uniform, not the players.

I got nervous when I saw what had happened as I flipped through the earlier issues of Onslaught Unleashed, but I was really *really* hoping she'd be okay. Still, at least (judging from these scans only) she held on firmly to a certain amount of control and self-awareness, right?

100% agreed. Both resonated with me (particularly Rikki, although I'm very different from her) - and I *am* genuinely glad to have read about them.

Eh this is the reason why i can't get into this event. After the Chaos War, House of M, Skrull Invasion, Dark Reign, and World War Hulk I just can't find myself to gasp at the idea that the heroes will have trouble with one god and her chain gang/pet. Maybe i've just been over-gasped and still recovering from the dozen other events we've had posted here on Scans.

In conclusion, I take it that Sin doesn't like Bucky huh?

I think Rikki and the revived Bucky have been two of the best Marvel characters in the last few years (and partly why - despite BND Spidey - I think Marvel has been itching over DC for me lately). It would be dumb to kill them off at this point (especially after going through all that trouble to bring Bucky of all characters back from the dead).
