Reboot news for Green Lantern

So it looks like Geoff Johns is remaining on the book. Per the AP article:
"It's building off the Green Lantern stories I've done since 'Rebirth,'" he told The Associated Press about the series, which is set to start in September and features art by Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy. "Taking it in a very new direction that we've never seen in 'Green Lantern' before."
"Green Lantern" isn't the only title planned, either. DC is also going to launch three other Green Lantern-related books, too, including "Green Lantern: The New Guardians," written by Tony Bedard and illustrated by Tyler Kirkham and Batt. That will feature Kyle Rayner leading the team. There will also be the "Red Lanterns," featuring Atrocitus and his fellow Red Lantern Corps members facing off against injustice and serving as judge, jury and executioners. The book is being written by Peter Milligan with art by Ed Benes and Rob Hunter.
A third book will also launch, too, "Green Lantern Corps." DC says that title, written by Peter J. Tomasi and illustrated by Fernando Pasarin and Scott Hanna, will see familiar Green Lanterns Guy Gardner and John Stewart as part of an elite strike force aimed at keeping the peace.

So with the reboot, DC had the golden opportunity to finally get rid of the obvious redundancy of four Earth GLs, and they didn't take it? Talk about missed opportunities.

Though I'm hoping Kyle will lead his team as a Blue Lantern but I doubt that will happen.

Date: 2011-06-03 01:32 pm (UTC)I do think that, ideally, at least one of the GL titles needs to be a classic space opera. They need to get these guys off of earth. Four GLs from earth is fine. Four GLs, or even two, on earth seems redundant and pointless.

Date: 2011-06-03 01:58 pm (UTC)A female Chinese Lantern would make a lovely addition to the League, with the added bonus that chinese lanterns are already a thing.

Date: 2011-06-03 04:27 pm (UTC)I want to love Hal like I used to. I miss those days so much. If only I had time, I would start a whole Hal series of posts, dedicated to all the stuff that Johns ignores and current GL fans have forgotten, or don't know about. Like Itty!

They're only redundant if they're all the same character, and if they're all protecting the Earth at the same time. As it is, I love the four GLs because they have a fantastic dynamic... when Johns and company actually TRY playing them off one another.
I miss the days of Gerard Jones GL, when Hal, Guy, and John were like a buddy trio who had serious issues with one another.

Date: 2011-06-03 09:13 pm (UTC)Far as I've seen, Johns' Hal now is far more flawless compared to the Hal of Emerald Dawn up to the point of Emerald Twilght. Have I missed something?

Date: 2011-06-03 07:26 pm (UTC)Could not disagree more. On more than one level if you count Alan Scott as a GL.
I think the missed opportunity was not having the multiverse restored so that any big-shot writers can have their own little sandboxes (and all the fans can support any and all of their favorites with their wallets). Gail says:
But September is giving us a hot car to drive and a huge endless horizon in every direction. No pre-built fences, no roadblocks erected decades ago for a different set of drivers entirely.
That might be true, but aren't we trading in one set of fences and roadblocks and building up another? Meanwhile, there are (might be?) a lot of babies going out with the bathwater, many very precious to many people, and I just don't think it's necessary to have that world abruptly end.

Huh? Kinda odd, I thought Hal was the NG guy.
Then again, Kyle always did work best in a team context. I'm not complaining.
