Saw the news on comicbookresources.com...

So it looks like Geoff Johns is remaining on the book. Per the AP article:

"It's building off the Green Lantern stories I've done since 'Rebirth,'" he told The Associated Press about the series, which is set to start in September and features art by Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy. "Taking it in a very new direction that we've never seen in 'Green Lantern' before."

"Green Lantern" isn't the only title planned, either. DC is also going to launch three other Green Lantern-related books, too, including "Green Lantern: The New Guardians," written by Tony Bedard and illustrated by Tyler Kirkham and Batt. That will feature Kyle Rayner leading the team. There will also be the "Red Lanterns," featuring Atrocitus and his fellow Red Lantern Corps members facing off against injustice and serving as judge, jury and executioners. The book is being written by Peter Milligan with art by Ed Benes and Rob Hunter.

A third book will also launch, too, "Green Lantern Corps." DC says that title, written by Peter J. Tomasi and illustrated by Fernando Pasarin and Scott Hanna, will see familiar Green Lanterns Guy Gardner and John Stewart as part of an elite strike force aimed at keeping the peace.

So with the reboot, DC had the golden opportunity to finally get rid of the obvious redundancy of four Earth GLs, and they didn't take it? Talk about missed opportunities.

THIS IS THE ONLY GOOD NEWS I'VE HEARD SO FAR

Though I'm hoping Kyle will lead his team as a Blue Lantern but I doubt that will happen.

I *like* that all 4 GLs from Earth are active. It's a big universe with lots of intrigue and opponents, and the boys are different enough, yet complete, that they do feel like individual members of an enforcement agency, instead of parts of a whole.

Yeah, besides, it's obvious that if they'd kept only one lantern, it would be Hal, and I'm not sure if I could deal with that. XD

I always felt like the Green Lanterns were the only ones who didn't really face the redundancy problem--as in it was easily explainable and easily fixable, because there are many different jobs any one of them can be doing as green lantern. They have such an expansive playground it is always struck me as poor planning and writing whenever they appeared redundant.

Honestly, people seem to forget that a solution to the question "Why are there four Earth GL's?" is to add multiple GL's from other planets as well.

That is a beautiful illustration. I like that the glove has seams and creases in it. I like it when superhero costumes look more like clothing (or armor, where appropriate), and less like body paint. I also like the way the ring's power beam has been painted here: it looks like a beam of light. I get tired of what are supposed to be beams of energy with black lines around the edges.

I do think that, ideally, at least one of the GL titles needs to be a classic space opera. They need to get these guys off of earth. Four GLs from earth is fine. Four GLs, or even two, on earth seems redundant and pointless.

I totally agree, both about the image and the need for a space-faring GL. Superheroing IN SPACE is a niche that doesn't have much filling it at the moment.

I don't object to four Earth Green Lanterns - it is, after all, the centre of the multiverse - but it sure would be nice if four randomly selected people from across the globe didn't all happen to be male Americans.

A female Chinese Lantern would make a lovely addition to the League, with the added bonus that chinese lanterns are already a thing.

Oh of course they didn't get rid of the four Earth-bound GLs, they, like Ray Palmer and Barry Allen, are Geoff Johns' pet characters.

They ain't going anywhere, unlike the characters that Geoff works for regularly. Like Wonder Woman, for example.

I'm happy all four Lanterns are sticking around, but I wish Johns would get his claws off of Hal. I firmly believe he (Hal) has the potential to be an engaging character (indeed he has been...under different writers) but Johns is not doing him any favours...at least as far as characterization goes.

You know I motto this, but MOTTO.

I want to love Hal like I used to. I miss those days so much. If only I had time, I would start a whole Hal series of posts, dedicated to all the stuff that Johns ignores and current GL fans have forgotten, or don't know about. Like Itty!

???

They're only redundant if they're all the same character, and if they're all protecting the Earth at the same time. As it is, I love the four GLs because they have a fantastic dynamic... when Johns and company actually TRY playing them off one another.

I miss the days of Gerard Jones GL, when Hal, Guy, and John were like a buddy trio who had serious issues with one another.

Yea. They have the same weapon, but they're very different characters, and they also have their own non-Earth playground.

Heck, with all the corps stuff it's amazing they have time for Earth at all even with all four of them.

...opportunity to finally get rid of the obvious redundancy of four Earth GLs...

Could not disagree more. On more than one level if you count Alan Scott as a GL.

I think the missed opportunity was not having the multiverse restored so that any big-shot writers can have their own little sandboxes (and all the fans can support any and all of their favorites with their wallets). Gail says:

But September is giving us a hot car to drive and a huge endless horizon in every direction. No pre-built fences, no roadblocks erected decades ago for a different set of drivers entirely.

That might be true, but aren't we trading in one set of fences and roadblocks and building up another? Meanwhile, there are (might be?) a lot of babies going out with the bathwater, many very precious to many people, and I just don't think it's necessary to have that world abruptly end.

Might be decent. I'm fine with Johns sticking around on Green Lantern as I thought he did a great job up until the Black Lantern War. Since then, I've been less impressed, but the good outweighs the bad. I'm very glad he's off The Flash, as I loathed the newest series. I liked Flash: Rebirth and I absolutely adored his work with Wally West and the Rogues on the previous Flash book, but the new Barry Allen book and Flashpoint have been incredibly boring.

I think my interest in current GL would be enhanced if A) I actually cared about Hal that much since his return and B) It stopped being all about the Rainbow of Fruit Lanterns and the Guardians being dicks. The DCU is big, vast and varied, let's see the GL's deal with the Khunds, the Psions, the Qwardians, whole new empires and species. As things stand it's just terribly... incestuous I suppose is the word.

None of this seems particular surprising, except for maybe the terminally boring Red Lantern starring in what seems like the most unappealing book imaginable. I can't help think this will be the inexplicable "Bad Milligan" rather than the guy who gave us gems like Shade The Changing Man.
Well, at least Benes couldn't possibly do any bendy spine cheesecake "art" with Atrocitus.

My second thought was that I should stop thinking of Guy as a buffoon -- I actually love him dearly as a character and a Green Lantern. And if I keep insulting him on the intarwebz, one of these days he'll be mooning me through my balcony window.
