Another Justice League book for September

First there was JLA and JLI, and now DC's also unveiled a series called... Justice League Dark. Hmm.

DC rolled out another batch of titles today. This time, it's Entertainment Weekly that has the scoop. So far, we've got...

*Swamp Thing, written by Scott Snyder

*Justice League Dark, starring Constantine, the Shade, Madame Xanadu, and Deadman, written by Peter Milligan

*A series called Demon Knights, about superheroes who fought crime in the Middle Ages (new characters?), written by Paul Cornell

*A Frankenstein series, written by Jeff Lemire

*Animal Man, also written by Lemire, drawn by Travel Foreman

It's not like JC hasn't ranted about superheroes even when he was in the main DCU. This feels very uncomfy.

The Cornell title sounds intriguing. I wonder if it'll be campy and K&S like in tone, or serious.

Fuck it. It's a dumb name, but it's Milligan writing Constantine, Xanadu, Shade and Deadman. There is no possible way that book is going to not be awesome.

Lemire on Animal Man and Frankenstein, Snyder on Batman, Simone on Batgirl, Morrison on Superman.

There's kinda where I'm at. I don't like all the changes, but I'm interested in three times as many DC books post-reboot then right now. Lemire on Animal Man/Frankenstein, Snyder Swamp Thing, Morrison Superman and Batman Inc, JH Williams III Batwoman and Simone Batgirl, hell they even convinced me to buy a Wonder Woman book for the first time since Greg Rucka left in 2004.

And going by Darwyn Cooke's blog, he doing something with Vigilante? You know how many dogs I would happily punt to get a Darwyn Cooke Vigilante ongoing!?

The lineup sounds cool, but Justice League Dark? Sounds like a name for a candy bar. I expect the cover will tell us the percentage of cocoa in each issue.

And what in the world is going on with Animal Man in that picture?

JL Dark seems like Shadowpact but more high-profile.

And okay, Frankenstein with Lemire sounds awesome.

But I made a pact to not buy any DC book other than Batwoman to show my displeasure with everything they've done.

I'm not buying anything until I know Cass and Steph still exist. If they don't, it's proof that DC hasn't learnt anything and that putting my trust as a reader in them to write stories I enjoy would be foolish.

I'll say the same thing about this as I did about Secret Avengers. It's okay to make up new team names sometimes. Especially when the alternative is to give a team a very stupid and misleading name.

Why on earth call it Justice League Dark? Even Dark Justice League would've been better, even though they'd be ripping of Marvel!

I must say though, that this is the first batch that sounds interesting. Only Wonder Woman and maybe Mister Terrific piqued my interest before this. Milligan, Lemire and Cornell have all produced brilliant stuff before, and these characters interest me a hell of a lot more than most DC characters!

All of these actually sound fairly interesting, with the exception of the Justice League.. thing. I simply lost all faith in Peter Milligan as a mainstream writer. Granted, a cast like this might play more to his strengths, but it still seems doubtful.
Lemire on Frankenstein and Animal Man sounds amazing though and strangely engouh, I'd be down for some good Sword&Sorcery, especially starring everyone's favourite rhyming demon.

What I find interesting is that it does look like the DCU's attempting to diversify the genres they tell in the line. I mean, yes, most of it's super-heroes, and, like, a third of it is Batman, but it also looks like you're going to have stuff like sci-fi drama, sword and sorcery, and an Anne Rice-esque vampire drama.

I mean, there's more than just "super heroes" in comics. I hope we'll still have Jonah Hex around.
