DC unveiled the more War-side of the relaunch, and confirms that the Wildstorm universe is now part of the main DCU.

BLACKHAWK #1

Blackhawk is an elite group of mercenaries made up of brave men from around the world equipped with the latest in cutting-edge hardware and vehicles. Their mission: Kill the bad guys before they kill us. A set of contemporary tales that battle the world’s gravest threats, BLACKHAWKS #1 will be written by Mike Costa and illustrated by Ken Lashley.

Is Zinda one of these people?

SGT. ROCK #1

The grandson of the original Sgt. Rock assumes the command of Easy Company, a team of crack ex-military men financed by a covert military contractor, as they brave the battle-scarred landscape carved by the DC Universe’s super-villains. SGT. ROCK AND THE MEN OF WAR #1 is contemporary military story fighting under modern conditions, and will be written by Ivan Brandon and illustrated by Tom Derenick.

DEATHSTROKE #1

A metahuman mercenary who made a living taking out the toughest targets, Deathstroke will reclaim his fearsome legacy by any means necessary in DEATHSTROKE #1, a new series from rising star Kyle Higgins (Batman: Gates of Gotham) and artists Joe Bennett and Art Thibert.

GRIFTER #1

Ex-black ops agent Cole Cash is a charming grifter that few can resist. And yet he’s about to be branded a serial killer when he begins hunting and exterminating inhuman creatures hidden in human form – creatures only he can see. Can the biggest sweet talker of all time talk his way out of this one when even his brother thinks he’s gone over the edge? Find out in GRIFTER #1, written by Nathan Edmondson with art by CAFU and BIT (the team behind T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS).

Oh, Jim Lee.

And the big WTF... J'onn joins the Authority in STORMWATCH #1.

Stormwatch is a dangerous super human strike force whose existence is kept secret from the world. Jack Hawksmoor and the rest of the crew look to recruit two of the deadliest super humans on the planet: Midnighter and Apollo. And if they say no? Perhaps the Martian Manhunter can change their minds. Featuring a surprising new roster, STORMWATCH #1 will be written by the critically-acclaimed Paul Cornell (Superman: The Black Ring, “Dr. Who”) and illustrated by Miguel Sepulveda.

I haven't been able to stop laughing ever since noticing that spike on Mindy's chinstrap.

'a surprising new roster' meaning that I can see some of my Wildstorm favourites get shat on because they don't quite compare to the DC heroes they're working alongside. Midnighter looks rubbish, and Apollo looks more like a Hyperion ripoff than 'sun god'.

Fuck you, Jim Lee, you sellout.

*pumps fists in the air* I was praying for a Deathstroke ongoing!

Yeah, you can tell Jim Lee redesigned these himself. Middie's old design was simple, classic and kinda scary. This just makes him look like an EXTREME version of Batman.

Is it me or is J'onn trying hard to hide his dimples (from a smile) as he makes googily eyes at Hyperion, I mean Apollo?

And with the posts above, I'm bailing on DC comics. Good luck, been nice knowing you.

That Grifter plot seems awfully reminiscent of "Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon"...

Blackhawk: so manly, even the women are men.

I do like how J'onn appears to be wishing he was eating oreos and milk in front of I Love Lucy re-runs right now. "Sigh...stuck in ANOTHER group that's barely noticeable. Someone's got some 'splainin to do..."

I didn't notice that spike until just now, but right after I thought the same thing!

Hopefully in issue 2 Apollo slices that bugger off.

Huh, now that you mention it--and you can say that The Doctor is a bit of a smooth talker himself, and was at least a veteran in a war...

You know, some of these look they could be interesting (I'm especially curious about Stormwatch and, outside of the ones mentioned here, All-Star Western), but I can't help but think...God, how many teams of elite soldiers can the DCnU hold? Like, what's the difference between the Sgt. Rock team and the Blackhawks?

Although the out-with-the-guns attitude would be better suited to, say, Canton E-D III.

Sgt. Rock and Blackhawks + Present day = Failure

At this moment, DC is now more Nineties than the Nineties were. This is what happens when you divide by zero.

Yeah, there do seem to be a heck of a lot of covert black-ops style "we do what the regular superheroes can't / won't do" style teams coming up in the reboot. Like, there seems to be more of these types than the regular superheroes, almost.

Yeah the fact that, out of all these military titles, none of them seem to actually BE in the military, they're all mercenaries or black ops, seems a little bizarre.

Ya know, maybe the 90s had too many pouches, but at least writers seemed to make an actual effort instead of throwing everything against the wall and seeing what sticks.

I dunno about more than superheroes--I mean have you SEEN all the Batman titles?--but yeah, hopefully they're being written to be more different in tone and how exactly they go about their business.

Although all these teams of soldiers and mercenaries constantly bumping into each other because they have so similar MOs would be hilarious.

Hm, I wonder if Vera Black'll accuse the Authority of ripping her off in this new continuity...

See, though it could potentially be controversial and likely could turn out badly, but it would have been interesting if, say, Sgt. Rock too place in Afghanistan or something.

I've been thinking about this too--some of the titles don't look great at all, but I have to admire DCnU for trying out something different.
