I mean, you could mistake how a maul works from just pictures, where people often "choke up" before sliding the hands down during the strike, and certainly it's easier to just carry an ax around by gripping that far up, if not to use it. I find people who haven't had to use hand tools often don't understand the way they use force, same as people who draw fancy backhand grips for swordfighting without knowing how little power you get out of them. It's probably hard to feel how effective these things are without trying them, not that that's really an excuse for not doing the homework. Maybe it's just my country roots, but I just want to go, sugarpie, haven't you ever had to chop firewood? Or drive a stake? Or, I don't know, you know?
Wouldn't it be more use in a close combat with that grip? (Which may well be the case if both attackers can fly and are likely to grapple in mid air).
If he were attacking something stationary then yes, the lower handle would make more sense for leverage, but in close brawling you don't have room to swing, so a "handbalde" would be a lot more useful.
I think it's a safety thing. If he held it at the bottom, he might accidentally tilt it too far towards him and impale himself on all of its random backwards-pointing spikes.
Really, he needs one of those extending-claw toys so he can wield it at a comfortable distance.
Having fought with quite a few blades over the years (I've never used an Axe outside of improvisation - twas me that killed the Bear - I can tell you that there's not only no point in having the bottom handle if you're going to hold the Axe like that, but that the handle would actually get in the way. Also the handle he's using at the top would half his ability to build up force. The only way his weapon makes sense is if he intends to use it to punch and block strikes.
Also in regards to the bear I killed, it was trying to eat a small child so I really had very little choice but to split its skull with my firewood axe - and I still nearly lost part of my arm.
Also, it looks like his hand is wrapped (okay, that's good) but INSIDE the handle, leading to all sorts of injuries directly and indirect (e.g. vibration).
What they really need to do with the reboot is have Golden Age Hawkman and Silver Age Hawkman be two separate guys instead of one guy who changes his origin story between the two every month. It worked for Flash, it worked for Green Lantern, now just do it to Hawkman.
