Pretty much any time I read British characters speaking in comics I just hear Eliza Doolittle. >_<

I'm going to love this anyhow because it's Beryl and Steph, but I have to admit that "our trip to England-land" stories usually make me cringe.

It's the obligatory bus/car trip with manages to take in Buckingham Palace, downing Street, the Telecom Tower, Trafalgar Square and Arch Marble inside 4 minutes that I always look forward to.

It was implied in it that Squire took Steph on a motorcycle ride to see "all the sights" (her words) in a ridiculously long trip, when Steph was worrying about Batman being pissed that she arrived at the hotel late.

As in, it was supposed to be a four-minute trip to the hotel, and instead took hours because Squire went everywhere BUT the hotel.

What I found even better was Knight apparently thinking that the best way to get from Heathrow to central London in 20 minutes was on a motorbike instead of taking the Heathrow Express like sane people would.

Also, obviously she is cockney. Because she's certainly not talking like the queen - and as we all know those are the only two accents English people are allowed to have.

...Still doing better than the Scots, Welsh and Irish though. They only get one!

yep, although I see the misunderstanding like it's more the Dick Van Dyke Version of cockney. Which is painful.

I saw Dick Van Dyke in an interview a couple of weeks ago and he was asked about that. He claims that no one ever during filming told him his accent was terrible. So I am a little more forgiving of him now. You would have thought that one of the many British actors and crew would have mentioned something.

Yeah, I loved Warren Ellis' Excalibur run, but giving Moira and Rahne, who would both have very soft, lilting West Coast/Islands accents (Which is actually more of a cadence than an accent) accents that sound closer to Glaswegian always grated (Though Claremont sort of started it, I hoped for more from Ellis)

And I long for the day that someone Aberdonian joins the team, just for the sheer "Whaaaaaat?" that the accent would engender in everyone else, upt to and probably including Cypher. :)

Cockney is plausible. Part of the current Knight/Squire dynamic is that Knight inherited wealth, title, and a superhero identity but is quite average in the smarts, while Squire is from an unprivileged background but is a genius.

Yep. Unfortunately the stereotype for cockney theoretically should limit her to the east end... and I was going to say essex but that's a whole different stereotype over here.

Beryl's supposed to have a gift for languages. Maybe she's cycling through all of them.

Doesn't Beryl adjust her accent to whomever she's talking to? I bet she can do a pretty good "chavspeak with a posh accent" ala Armstrong and Miller.

I'd guess she defaults to "Estuary English", the sort of South East accent (perhaps most familiar to Americans who might be on S_D as the accent that David Tennant used in "Doctor Who"), It's not quite Cockney,

As noted though, she apparently has a Doug-like metahuman facility with languages and communication, so will talk to people in their own way at their own level and possibly in something akin to their own accent.

Well, Beryl lives in a village/small town near which Cyril has a mansion. Which I guess could be anywhere, but as I'm from Buckinghamshire right between low-income Slough and Well-to-do Windsor, I always imagined her as having my accent :)
