Daken and the little Italian girl
Jun. 17th, 2011 12:40 amMy favorite scene in all that I've read of Daken, wherein he projects himself on a little girl.
I wish he'd adopted her, though I know it never would have worked out anyway.
Dark Wolverine #87, four pages.

Also, I'll just pimp this out over here: WHEN AUs BECOME HISTORICAL.

I do solemnly wish she'll pull a Lady Bullseye and be inspired to become powerful and independent or something like that.
Or that Daken gets a kid sidekick, because he has an obvious soft spots for kids who aren't brats or spoiled.

Date: 2011-06-17 07:01 am (UTC)Harsh care and all that, trying to teach the girl that probably, likely, no one will care how she feels. And I don't think he ever said or implied she'd deserve it, but she will definitely get hurt and he's just telling her not to let people think she's weak so it's less likely for them to take advantage of her fragile state.
Like I said, he takes it from experience. He's projecting himself on the girl, on this kid who's being forced into something that puts her in danger.

Date: 2011-06-17 07:13 am (UTC)I mean, did they really need to show a grown man wrestling a young girl to the floor, telling her to "smile, this won't take long," while she cries and screams no? And that's not even the whole of it. There was a definite, rapey vibe through the whole of the scene; Daken MADE it rapey as soon as he spoke not of stealing from men, but of "touching" them - the wrong ones and in the wrong ways.
It's the kind of scene they would never, ever do with a young boy, because they realise that everyone would find the implications gross and unnecessary. But for some reason it's "edgy" and entertaining to do it with girls...
But apart from that I did think it was a good character moment for Daken, I guess? :/

Date: 2011-06-17 07:42 am (UTC)So I'm mad at the creators who felt the need to sexualise the scene in such a nasty way just because hey, she's a girl, right? I'm not mad at the character of Daken - or you, if you were at all worried about that!

Date: 2011-06-17 07:45 am (UTC)I was agreeing though, at least in terms of Daken's character, there was absolutely no need for the creators to sexualize this scene. You're too right.

Date: 2011-06-17 02:49 pm (UTC)He also has this nice random scene where he gives a little boy a lollipop in Madripoor. Even when it's just random throwaway scenes, they like to emphasize his love of children, it seems.

Date: 2011-06-17 02:56 pm (UTC)A genuine respect/affinity for children is just.. the best thing to give Daken. It works for his personality, and it works SO well for his "part of the Wolverine mythos" side. It's such a little touch, but it makes for such a deepening of his character and his book.
Also I just really enjoy.. non-simpering.. characters who work with children (see also: Emma Frost). I can relate!

Date: 2011-06-17 03:20 pm (UTC)Dang, I don't even know that much about Daken, but I already know that I am susceptible to his charms. I'm generally predisposed to like *any* comic character who is widely hated.
I suppose it's because I am a contrary git.

Date: 2011-06-17 03:22 pm (UTC)They are far apart because of the FORCE of his EMOTION! When he gets upset his eyes fly about his face like the balls on those executive office toys. He's just that much of a pent-up woobie.

Date: 2011-06-20 09:22 am (UTC)Easily the best portrayal of Daken so far. (this above scene...not Daniel Way's series...)

Date: 2011-06-20 02:38 pm (UTC)But he actually ends up messing things with his writing/plotting... Confusing and losing focus... (Johnny Blaze was an angel all-along, Wolverine isn't a mutant but a "Lupin" in reality, Daken emo all the time/turning into Dark Wolverine, Hit-monkey forgotten as quickly as he was introduced...)
But, yeah. Great characterisation of Daken here!
