Brightest Day Aftermath: Search for Swamp Thing

ComicBookResources has the preview for the Swamp thing one shot.

As the Vertigo characters and DC Universe begin to interact again, we get Dark Knight encountering one English Bastard for the title of "man you do NOT want to f! with".





Some of that DCnU seems to be seeping in already, as BRUCE of all people should have a fair idea who Constantine is. (They both hooked up with Zatanna and Bruce keeps his eye on the international underdworld, where John is a boogeyman himself.)

Art is decent, but I am not feeling it. Something about how the scenes transition....

Looking at the rest of the preview, I think I would have the same reaction that Bats had if someone just lit up a cig and started puffing away in my car.

Not meaing to sound smart-arse, but looking at that belt (on one of the other pages on CBR) thats Dick, who presumably hasn't met JC before.

Actually, I think that's Dick Grayson. Yes, it is difficult to tell which is in the costume at certain times. So far, if there is a yellow oval around the bat symbol, it is Bruce. If there isn't, it is Dick. I think.

I'm wondering how much Constantine is going to sound like Constantine versus how much he's going to sound like Spike from Buffy. I can bloody well guarantee you that many writers are going to mistake him for the latter.

I forgot to mention Buzz from Supergirl by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. If you count him, then that's either three, or still one, depending on how you count 'em. ;p

Yeah, I first assumed that was Bruce too, but it does make more sense if it's Dick. Dick's probably never met John, and it's probably been so long that John's seen Batman that he probably assumed that he lost a bit of weight or something.

Also, I loved the "NO SMOKING IN THE BATMOBILE" panel. :D

I hate this style of writing. It's the kind of writing that leads to Punisher running over Wolverine with a steam roller and Wolverine, well I don't remember what he did, but I know it was pretty over the top in response

That would be Garth Ennis, who was not only redoing a bit from Hitman (the Hitman/Lobo special, where Tommy hits Lobo with a wrecking ball; he even has Logan talk more like Lobo), but also doing the thing where he put the three main superheroes that are kind of on Frank's level (Logan, Spider-Man and Daredevil) in humiliating situations until Marvel made Punisher a MAX series and he didn't have to deal with the MU at all. (Please note that that's just my theory and is backed up by exactly nothing; however, the comparison between Hitman/Lobo and Punisher/Wolverine completely works.)

Yeah, it's probably Dick. Still curious, though: didn't JC meet Bruce at the memorial service for Swampy back in the Alan Moore run, when Swampy's spirit left Earth and everyone thought he was dead?

The attempt at British dialogue is painful to my ears. To go from the formal sounding "I required your full attention, I'm afraid" to the more chavvy "I'm a nasty piece of work, chief" (the latter which is verbatim from Constantine's first conversation with the Swamp Thing back in the day) is really awkward.

I was kind of scratching at my face in the first page but then it started sounding semi-casual in the second and I thought maybe I was imagining it.
Then I went back to the first page where John appeared and I pretty much started scratching again.

I'm completely fine with maybe!Dick tossing John out of the car, that's totally appropriate since he was being a prick. But the punch (that somehow sends Constantine across the alley?) just didn't read as Dick to me. But then, I don't claim to be an expert on the bat boys by any means.

FTR, this is not a 1-shot, it's the first issue of a 3-issue mini. (Unless DC's changed their minds, but it's still listed as a mini on the site, and cancelling the thing outright would make more sense than truncating 3 issues to 1.)

And I realize it's a small thing to get picky about, but superheroes DO NOT wear their underwear on the outside of their uniforms. They wear tights with shorts over them.

*cry* I want to read this, but I don't know if I can stand to read a John Constantine that does not sound like the Constantine I know and love. I know not all dialogue shows the accent in the words but that was what the old comics used to do, and I got used to hundreds of issues where he spoke the same way.

Still, kicking him out of the car was hilarious.
