So Superman #712 was originally solicited for Jun 8 with the following text

Meet Los Angeles’s newest super hero in the latest Chapter of “Grounded”: Sharif! But Sharif discovers that in today’s current cultural climate, some people don’t want his help – they just want him gone. Can Superman aid Sharif and quell a prejudiced public, or are there some problems too big even for the Man of Steel to solve?

Now it's been resolicited... for tomorrow(or today, by the time most of you read this), with a new story by Kurt Busiek. Here's the media release, as read here

Media Release -- Please note the new contents for SUPERMAN #712, now written by Kurt Busiek with art by Rick Leonardi, a cover by Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino and a variant cover by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau.

This fill in issue contains a lost classic, Lost Boy: A Tale of Krypto the Superdog, set shortly after Superboy died in Infinite Crisis and Superman went missing.

DC Comics determined that the previously solicited story did not work within the "Grounded" storyline. However, Chris Roberson, will be back for the final two issues of Superman's year long walk across America. As we near the conclusion, catch up with Superman next month as he makes stops in Portland and Newberg, OR.

So DC cut the story about what looks to be a Muslim hero facing prejudice, even from those he's saving, but since Roberson's been working from JMS's plots and JMS has used Grounded to be so very preachy and political, is this maybe a good thing?

For legality, the first comic page I found in my imageshack files...

I'd call missing JMS' take on Muslim prejudice issues (via the filter of Roberson) a good thing, given the scans here of how he's handled everything else.

Gotta give JMS credit, if he can turn 'Don't be racist!' into a heavy handed and borderline wrong story, ya know?

Agreed, but it's also a ridiculously missed opportunity, since they already have used a Muslim writer, G. Willow Wilson, to do fill-ins on this arc before. Granted, I know plenty of people didn't care for her issues, but if she is better-equipped to write one story above JMS, it's one about Islamophobia.

I hope the only reason they didn't go with her is because she turned them down (very likely as she has a four-month-old), and not because they didn't think to ask.

The replacement story they're using is actually an old one that, originally solicited for SUPERMAN 659 but, for whatever reason, never published. I think it had something to do with Superboy legal issues at the time.

The original solicitation for issue 659:

SUPERMAN #659
Written by Kurt Busiek
Art by Rick Leonardi & Jesus Merino
Cover by Carlos Pacheco & Merino
Ever since the death of Superboy during the Infinite Crisis, fans have wondered what became of Krypto, and what those events meant for him. Now, writer Kurt Busiek is joined by sensational guest penciler Rick Leonardi (SUPERMAN RETURNS: LEX LUTHOR, BATGIRL, NIGHTWING) to tell a surprisingly touching tale of the Dog of Steel's most tragic days, laying the groundwork for Krypto's surprising future.

Well, if they didn't ask knowing she has a four-month-old, I'd buy that.
