The newest trailer for the Captain America: The First Avenger film, complete with a lot more dialogue than previous trailers.

Legality:

The trailer. Thoughts:

- Increasingly, I'm thinking this might be the best superhero film of the summer (and I liked Thor and X-Men: First Class quite a lot).

- There's a lot more character stuff than previous trailers; in particular, Peggy gets a lot of dialogue, and I think she's shaping up very nicely. Hayley Atwell I already knew was a good fit for this period in history (Brideshead Revisited), and unlike a lot of superhero love interests she's gorgeous while not looking or sounding like a bad fit for her supposed occupation (hello, scientist Jessica Alba).

- I also like what we see/hear of Erskine. Despite being such a pivotal figure in Steve's backstory, he's a pretty undefined figure in the comics. I assume Howard Stark is there to take over as Steve's Q after Erskine dies.

- The role of army colonel, whatever the era, fits Tommy Lee Jones like a glove.

I love how this is a human story, one of us getting the chance to do something truly exceptional not just because of the strength of his body, but his will and character.

Case in point: The grenade scene.

No offence to the other actors who I really do like the look of in this (and I'm likely to be loving this movie), but Tommy Lee Jones is awesome x 100. He's on my short list of my all time favs :)

Immediately the movie has gravitas. Him and Hugo Weaving. I'm there, with bells on.

This does look better and better. My only problems with the film are the casting for Cap and Bucky, but that's those particular actors.

Captain America - I'll be there with bells on. It can't be worse than Green Lantern, and that's aces.

I was toying with the idea of seeing Green Lantern until I read one one-line review.

Then everything else that I read echoed that review.

In contrast, I heard some mixed things about First Class and loved it to bits.

I do hope that there's an extended recruitment montage on the DVD.

I really didnt want to get my hopes up for this film, my fear has, and to a certain point, is still, that they were going to use the basis for Ultimate Cap... but the more i see of this film, the more i think and feel that they truly are doing to Real/Original Captain America. ANd this makes me happy. it truly looks epic. Not just as a comic book movie, but a REAL good movie period.

I'm sure it's been done by someone somewhere but I'd love to read the What If where steve rogers never gets the super-soldier serum, and just like... works his ass off to get into the military and get through basic training and shit anyway and ends up going to war and doing a bunch of incredibly brave and heroic shit that wins us the war, anyway.

"Heroes are made in America".

Well, that line pretty much killed my enthusiasm for the movie, now I don't think I'll go see it.

Look, I know it's Captain America. I know it's supposed to be very patriotic.

But they could have very easily praised America without basically stating that all the other countries are useless. Why the put down? It was so unnecessary. The America Wins The War trope annoys the shit out of me.

I wonder what Germans think about all the stereotyping about nazis tbh (unavoidable in this case). Then again I found out when I took a film module at uni that often in American cinema it's always Brits playing evil characters in things like historical or high fantasy films. (But they're getting over that now).

As a historian it annoys me too.
