How Kid Flash got started

In the latest issue of YOUNG JUSTICE, Aqualad and Kid Flash tell their origins over campfire marshmallows and s'mores. Aqualad's is just an elaboration on what we were already told in the Atlantis episode, while Kid Flash's has an interesting divergence from his DC Universe origin.



We also get our first real look at Ocean Master's costume in this world.




When Wally West discovers Barry Allen's notes, he duplicates the experiment, too... to a very explosive result. The explosion hospitalizes him.

Heh, nice. I'm not sure I like Wally's new origin, and his personality being turned into Bart's.

(Then again, that looks like what's happening in the new Teen Titans too. Bleh!)

I dunno--from what I've read, Wally was probably equally as annoying during his TT/NTT run back in the day.

It does seem that any speedsters of that age do tend to approach Impulse. The younger they are when they get their powers, the more like impulse they are.

Which makes a lot of sense IMHO. A relatively normal kid suddenly hit with speed powers could be INCREDIBLY annoying in record time, no?

Which is why Bart was, whilst you could always see Max's frustration with him, leavened with an amusingly literal worldview and a genuine absence of malliciousness.

Yeah, true. I never really found Impulse annoying, if only because I think it's too much to expect someone with his upbringing to know how to act normally.

Characters like Bart, Secret, Cassandra Cain deserve alot more patience and understanding than they get, IMO. Whenever anyone respects the fact that they have a completely different emotional foundation, different from 90% of the population, it's treated as some great act of empathy when it should be *standard fair*.

I always found Impulse endearing, never annoying. I was more irritated with other people who treated him like a little shit when he was practically an angel (albeit a very curious angel) compared to other kids his age.

He's a smart kid whose only 'flaw' was his enthusiasm for things.... never found him in any way annoying.You're totally right about him, Secret and Cass, at that.

Per my response to Icon, one of the things I liked about the Impulse series was it tended to acknowledge this. A lot of stories will present you with a young person making more or less understandable, often actually pretty reasonable decisions, and then rake the character over the coals for it anyway, but Impulse tended to do a pretty good job of presenting its title character's reasonable actions as reasonable and acknowledging that the mentor figure really was just being kind of a dick about it.

This. I think if you ask some writers and fans, Bart was the "Beast Boy" to the Young Justice-aged kids. NO. That was Kon (and I miss his perverted, cocky,opportunistic, yet good natured and brave characterization).

Bart wasn't really stereotypically hyperactive (in the sense of being motormouthed) either. Hell he was quiet most of his appearances in YJ and Impulse, and frankly I think most of the other characters got a tinge of fear when he was too quiet, cuz that meant he probably was up to something.

Barts whole thing thing was that he just wasn't "HERE" in the same way most people are. He was usually off in his own world, took everything literally, and wanted to explore the new crazy world around him, at his own horribly fast pace of course.

One of the things I liked about Impulse is that surprisingly often it came down of the side of Bart actually being a pretty decent kid and Max being kind of a dick.

I dunno about the original TT, since I've only read two or three issues of it, but in NTT he was a bit less impulsive, so to speak. If anything, he was closer to Barry than Bart in personality.

Actually, Wally was pretty subdued compared to Bart. He wanted to be a regular kid, go to school, etc. He wasn't as much a sidekick for Barry as his teammates (except Donna) were for their mentors, and there was every indication he could take or leave the gig. (Until Crisis had him replace Barry, and thus accelerated the aging of his compatriots, but that's another can of worms.)
