I like that they finally acknowledge the deeper relationship that's been there with Harley/Ivy all these years. I just wish it was done in a better story.
The only weirder thing is to think how this'll be undone in the future. Joker is more than likely to leave her again or try to kill her and have her leave again. And then Ivy will become friends with her again? I guess that'll end up having Ivy as the one who needs Harley more than vice versa.
I would assume that it'll be after a while when time's healed some of the wounds--especially since Harley's probably going to be in the Suicide Squad for a while, probably as this master manipulator that we're seeing here. It'd be funny if they meet again with Harley in the Suicide Squad and Ivy in the BOP--
HARLEY: Oh Ivy, you wouldn't take a swing at little ole' me, would you? IVY: Sorry Harl--you burned that bridge back at Arkham, and you can seduce the ultimate seductress. *THWACK* HARLEY: Arrrrgh! IVY: Nice outfit, by the way.
As I often point out..Clown at Midnight is one of my absolute favorite Joker stories. One of the things I liked about it is that Harley finally seemed to have smartened up and wants to get away from Joker..so..what was the point in Gotham City Sirens? Just..what was the point if one of the end results was Harley going back to a violent man, who doesn't love her, and hell abuses her? Is this being done because of her status in the new DCU? Even so.. just..no.
What was the point of Gotham City Sirens anyway? Dini, the book's first writer, never really gave us a concrete answer as to why these three women were living together. By all means, Harley and Ivy could live together, but between them, they've manipulated, shot, framed and tried to kill Selina over the course of various stories. That, above all else, bothered me about this book. This latest dump on the shitheap that is this book bothers me comparatively less, although it's really disappointing to even see Harley acting like this after how it was set up with her going into Arkham.
However, I'm kind-of glad she seems to be getting a reboot to set her apart from the Joker, that will hopefully define her more in the main DCU. As it is, this is just a horrid distortion of the DCAU. The Harley of the Animated Series was a sweet, kind-of-dense, lovable villainess who could nonetheless be lethal if she needed to be, but she at least had some redeeming features. This version is disgusting, especially given she skillfully got rid of Cash with the intention of killing the Joker, only to fall into his arms again. Sickening.
I' m sorry there is no way Harley could beat Ivy...I mean sure psychological tactics here but she should have owned them...wow....
But these DOES look like interesting set-up for BOP. I really dont think with the reboot that anything remotely Bat-related is getting changed too much and if so are in story. Perhaps this is reasoning enough for Ivy to go total legit for BOP?
I've always preferred Ivy being more shades of gray along with Selina and Harley as well. Anti-villains and anti-heroes. I don't really like seeing them "Muhahaha" evil.
Actually same goes for The Riddler, I find him useless as a villain. Bring back the inept gumshoe!
I hated in the world's finest issue they had with BatSteph and Supergirl Catwoman was totally a villain and Steph tied her up! Selina was the one that took her to the hospital after Blackmask tortured her didn't she? Thus also fueling her reasons to kill him right? Made no sense.
I haven't read the other issues up to this, it looks like Harley had a meltdown and went on a killing spree with The Joker and Ivy is trying to snap her out of it right?
I really wish Dini didn't abandon this, I would have liked to see where he would have taken it.
I don't know, as I said above, Dini never really seemed to have his heart in this book. He never gave a reason why these three women should be living/working together, really - Especially Selina after what the other two have done to her.
As for what led up to this - After Selina was attacked by Talia and some other crap happened, Harley stormed Arkham with the intention of murdering the Joker once she got to him, even disabling the Asylum's best guard with the revelation that the Joker had killed his son. As soon as she got to the Joker, however, she fell into his arms and then they started the killing spree in Arkham.
As it is, I don't see why Ivy hasn't just snapped Joker's neck. Must be that solid-gold immunity the bastard has.
Plot and character issues aside, what the hell is up with the art here? The bottom of that first page - I don't think I've ever seen Harley look like a bodybuilding, stout midget before.
It's never just you. I expected it tot the point that I was surprised to see the speech bubble there and spent a second wondering who was saying that. Fully expected a lip-lock.
I like how the last issue of the series utterly destroyed the interpersonal relationship of the characters, making everything even more pointless. Good thing this isn't serial fiction, huh?!
Three or four issues ago, this seemed like a story with some potential. Then we got the Joker disguised as a clown scratching babies with rusty nails on the off-chance that they get tetanus and...jeez, this is sad.
Then we got the Joker disguised as a clown scratching babies with rusty nails on the off-chance that they get tetanus
Well bear in mind that we're probably meant to assume that 100% of those babies did, with absolute certainty, get tetanus, cause that's just Joker's magic murder powers in action.
(Because I can't reference Homer at the end of "The Shinning" without getting in trouble with the mods... even if it does more accurately reflect how this particular story made me feel.)
You want to play it like that DC, fine. But just like I said about Marvel, if you try to handwave this shit away later and have these characters NOT get punished? Make them truly evil. Thats fine.
But they better get their comuppance later.
Of course when World World Hulk DIDN'T end with Hulk basically DESTROYING everyone who wronged him I gave up on Marvel.
Geese, this is going to leave me with what, Webcomics?

Yea, I hate that too.

Non-big two comics! Witchblade and Fred Perry's Gold Digger and Sonic the Hedgehog and Usagi Yojimbo!
One can have long-running comics with continuity that lack this problem :)
