Yesterday, we were talking about Women's Lib in 70s DC and Showcase 97 was mentioned. You can find it reprinted in the Power Girl pre-Infinite Crisis trade

It's the one with the awesome Adam Hughes cover.

Anyway, on to Showcase 97

Have to say that I feel that that Hughes cover is screamingly out of place.

I like the fact she's solidly built in the actual comic, but I'm sorry, when I look at that Power Girl I can't see anything but BOOTS... ENORMOUS WIDE TURN DOWN BOOTS! and that's not something I expected with Karen!

I don't understand the need for massive, flappy gloves and foots that look like they don't actually fit her. Look at either of the Ms. Marvel costumes to see how gloves and boots can work better.

Maybe she wears them to distract people from her... other attributes.

Course, in these comics her bust was drawn more reasonably, it may not work since she's become the queen of the most common superpower.

That's because you've only read her in the Boobwindow! modern era. The turndown boots is my PG.

Nope, it's my era too, (this and JLA/JSA crossovers back in the early 80's), and I recall the JLA/JSA George Perez version being a lot more practical.

That's exactly the same costume, just a difference in the two artists' styles. Unless you're saying the costume she wore in most of her pre-Crisis appearances was more practical than the one she sports now, in which case, I agree.

IMHO the boot cuffs are more than stylistically different, they're a LOT smaller.

And I am also saying that her pre-Crisis costume was more practical.

Except that this was during the era when superheroes' costumes didn't change. Oh sure, there was that confusion when Wally Wood and editorial couldn't decide whether PG had a boobwindow or not, so she had it in some issues and not in others, but generally artists couldn't get away with changing elements of heroes' costumes without editorial approval.

If it was a true-blue change, editorial would have made a big deal out of it.

On Power Girl? Unlikely in the early 80's when she showed up about once a year as a guest star in the JLA/JSA crossover and that was about it. As minor a change as the cut of her boots wouldn't even register.

Consider that when Wonder Woman changed her costume around this time, it wasn't even done in her own comic, but in an insert in DC Comics Presents.

Oddly, that cover is sexy but with only minimal offensive objectivity.

I've always loved that AH! pic of Karen. Her personality is so palpable here.

I'm impressed with how her costume goes from scoop-necked, to v-necked, to square-necked, and then back to the scoop (only lower-cut), all within four or five panels.

I can never get my clothes to do that...

I can't lie: Flared Gloves and Folded Boots (as the COH costume creator calls them) are some of my costume weaknesses. I just love those.

I think it's Don Karnage's fault, at least for the boots.

I did some Power Girl costume gallery art not long ago if anyone wants to see.
