Two-face kills Mario Falcone and confronts Gilda.

Lucky batman mask prevent bullet penetration and absorb the impact from the firearm. Two-face and Gilda leaves him knock out. Damian comes moments later to the scene to take him back to the batcave bruise with a very bad headache.

I'd love to try and explain what'd going on, but Tony Daniel himself doesn't seem to know what the hell story he's telling. Gilda Dent is in possession (has stolen?) Harvey's coin, and she got involved with Mario Falcone after they both went insane following the events of The Long Halloween (she went insane?) and Dark Victory, a pairing which totally makes sense. He then became a mob boss and then kept her as a prisoner or something, and so she offered the Riddler (who still have amnesia but now it's Evil Amnesia) files on his past in exchange for protecting a now-totally-deranged and coinless Harvey from Falcone, which involved the Riddler drugging Harvey, rigging him with a squib vest, and having Gilda pretend to kill Harvey in front of Falcone. Harvey awakens in his grave, Riddler fills him in, they assemble a private army and storm Falcone's, and we get this.

... Yeah, figured that wouldn't make things any clearer.

...Good god, even your explanation doesn't make sense. This story is so nonsensical that it literally defies explanation.

Thank you for posting this, even though it leaves me frustrated all to hell. I was expecting this to be a lot worse, y'know? Like, that Gilda was just manipulating Harvey, using him for her own ends, and that he'd kill her or that she'd die at the end. So no, instead we get a work of staggering mediocrity, edging towards being a just-plain-bad comic that no one seems to care is a bad comic.

I'm actually dumbfounded by how lousy that story was, entirely written in such a sloppy and haphazard way that I wonder if anyone gave a damn about the product they were creating. I mean, is all this going to get retconned out anyway, and they just went, "What's the point?" Or was Daniel forced to just cut his various subplots short due to the impending cancelation/reboot? Seems unlikely, as the Bat-Books are supposedly to remain unaffected by the soft-reboot. Or that does only count for Grant Morrison, and does everyone else just have to deal?

Even still, it doesn't excuse the lazy writing across the board. So we're not going to get any explanation about what was up with Gilda all along? I want to know what the "there's so much you don't know!" is! I mean, shit, Tony Daniel, if you're going to completely ignore the fact that Gilda never actually "died" but remarried and raised Harvey's biological twin sons, you could at least CREATE a whole new backstory to follow your beloved Long Halloween continuity. Instead, we get a couple sentences about how Gilda met Mario Falcone in a mental hospital and they somehow inexplicably fell in love or something?

And then there's the Riddler thing. The really stupid thing is that his last line there the one single solitary instance I've seen of the Riddler actually asking something even resembling a riddle. Did I miss a plot point, and is there an actual reason why this abysmal Riddler doesn't riddle? Never mind that this entire thing with Enigma has never been explained and probably never will. Who the hell is she? Is she really his daughter? How did they meet? Why does he have her with him? Why is she suddenly disdainful of him at the last minute? Why does he hurt/kill her? WE DON'T GET ANY EXPLANATION. SHIT JUST HAPPENS AND NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE EITHER WAY. The editor doesn't care, the writer doesn't care, and no fans seem to be complaining or even noticing.

Mainly, I'm just frustrated as a Two-Face fan. Between this and The Long Way Down, Harvey's solo feature in Streets of Gotham, this is the second time he's been featured in a terrible story that felt shoddily constructed and edited, but which ran in a story that nobody read or cared enough about to complain.

This is bad. Sloppy, badly written, badly paced, with tone-deaf dialogue and no real point or purpose. This is bad storytelling. Plain and simple.

I agree twoface has always been my bat villian and I was excited to see him centall in a story. Through the whole arc Dick and Harvey only intereact through those pages posted in this thread. Worst of all it is still up in the air if that women is really Gilda, based on how they were acting. I do not care for Tony Daniel, but I really want to know where this was going and why riddler is doing all of this to get pictures of himself. I just hope a better writer can do more with this, or TD's run just gets ignored.

I think the art was freaking incredible though.

"Or was Daniel forced to just cut his various subplots short due to the impending cancelation/reboot?"

It seems like Daniel has bad luck with this--remember that two-parter Riddler story that he did just before Batman #700 came out?

Though, to be fair, I don't think it's entirely impossible that he won't continue some of this stuff when he starts Detective Comics in September.

Also, I'm pretty sure Enigma was explained/introduced during some run of Teen Titans.

Not really relevant to this particular set of scans, but it's something I was just wondering recently:

Has there ever been a writer who's written the outcome of the coin flips in a Two-Face story based on actual coin flips they did in real life?

God, I wish. Shit, I'd love to see a Two-Face "Choose Your Own Adventure" that comes with a coin, and the reader has to follow it no matter where it goes. I tried writing one, and damn, those things are hard to pull off. I may try again sometime.

I've wondered this for the longest time: Why is Harvey's hair white on his scarred side? Like, did the acid turn it white? Is that possible?

From: [personal profile] thehefner
Yeah, it supposedly damaged the follicles or something. I'm not sure if it is possible, but hey, a bit of creative license is allowed when the very nature of his acid scarring often times defines all sense of reality (case in point: The Dark Knight, where he should have been utterly blinded by constant horrible screaming pain, if not already dead).

This is horrible and pretty much out of character for everyone. I'm just going to pretend that Tony Daniel's ode to the Long Halloween is just an Elseworlds.

And DC is giving Tony Daniel not one but TWO books to write in this upcoming reboot - one of them ('Tec) the namesake of the entire company. The mind boggles.

Considering that TLH in the first place was a Legends of the Dark Knight story and thus not really in continuity, I'd say that the Elseworlds explanation for this story suits just fine.

Daniel's approach in this story confuses me, although for probably due to a slightly different reason than most mentioned here. I get that Daniels likes LONG HALLOWEEN and DARK VICTORY, I'm personally also fond of them, and I get that he wanted to do an homage of sorts to that story, kind of carrying on a storyline he thought great, it isn't that rare after all.

What I don't get is that why does he seem to get wrong so many parts of the Loeb storyline. Gilda was the farthest thing from a femme fatale, it was actually kind of the point. Why would she be in an asylum? She was insane, yes, but not in the kind of a way that is noticed and she had no reason to act out after that. The whole point of the Two-Face sacrifice at the end of LONG HALLOWEEN was that Harvey knew that Gilda did it, but covered for her, allowing her to move on to another life. That's just one way this story doesn't work when compared to the original storyline, which just makes the whole thing bizarre.

As I recall from your wonderful "Rumble in Gotham" posts from back in the day, you loathed Hush. If so--and if you don't mind my asking--why then are you so fond of TLH and DV? For my money, the quality of writing is pretty much the same, but Tim Sale just sold it better than Lee.

Also, when did Harvey learn that Gilda was the killer, and in what way exactly did he cover for her?

I have to ask.... what the hell happened in that last panel? Because the only explicitly green and purple thing I saw there was the girl's striped pants, and if that's what he was talking about, I have to mark up another moment where I'm glad I don't like DC.
