I guess all of this is very YMMV, because a comparable situation, to me, is how Andrekyo handled Obsidian in Manhunter. Before Manhunter, Todd was coming to terms with his sexuality, and didn't really identify as anything (but did make a point that he was still attracted to women), and was pretty seriously depressed, but then he shows up in Manhunter as a happy, well-adjusted gay man. And then there are some serious moments of OOC (like when he talked about musicals, because all gay men like musicals amirite?).
Without any sort of bridge, it's hard to reconcile the two characters, because they are just very different.
