Are we entirely certain that Alfred isn't, like, immortal or something? I mean, seriously. He's not actually seen in Batman Beyond (so obviously, he can't be in Gotham then, I don't think), but I don't remember anyone ever saying that he'd died, even though by that point Bruce is probably in his seventies or eighties. Plus, while his appearance varies from medium to medium, I don't recall him ever looking older or younger throughout pretty much anything in a way that can't be attributed to different artists. (How old is Alfred supposed to be, anyways? Because I don't think he was particularly young when he started raising Bruce, and he still seems pretty spry for an older gentleman.)

OMG. Maybe Alfred is a vampire. Or possibly an aspect of one of the Endless or something. O_O But realistically speaking, I don't know if it's possible for that much awesome-ness and badass-ness to be concentrated into one single mere mortal. I mean, he raised the Goddam Batman all by himself from age eight onward. He's the person who single-handedly keeps the entire Batclan functioning and somewhat capable of coexisting with the general public. Think about it.

Or a Time Lord.

Maybe Bruce needs more "hello"s. :|

The Time Lord idea is disturbingly plausible. I think I may still be leaning towards vampire, though. Because it amuses me to think that a man who dresses up like a giant bat was raised by a vampire... who either can't turn into a bat himself, or considers it too "undignified" to actually do. *gigglesnort* Also, teddybears in your icon, do want! :D

The Time Lord thing is disturbingly plausible, Alfred once said that who knew a fantastic Doctor Who...
Sadly, I don't have that issue or a scan of it to upload here.

o_O And I seem to recall a Batman and Robin cover that involved the Doctor in the Batmobile and Batman and Robin in the Tardis, which despite the fact that obviously canonical crossovers don't really happen much anymore and that they don't necessarily indicate that two stories are intended to actually occur in the same universe without inter-dimensional travel, does nevertheless say something.

The Pennyworths are actually cousins of the MacLeods. Alfred and his kin are princes of the universe, biotch.

Given how badass Alfred Pennyworth is supposed to be in All-Star Batman and Robin, this is more than plausible.
