I promised a while back I'd scan a few images from one of Nakao Takeuchi's Sailor Moon art books that I happened upon some years ago, so here they are.

Now I have to confess, I am not a fan of Sailor Moon herself, I know she's the hero, but I find her falling into the category of "main character who isn't nearly as interesting in terms of personality or ability than their supporting cast" (cf "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings")

The Inner Senshi are quite fun, and I have a soft spot for Mercury because I always like the dynamic of combatants who don't revel in combat.

However, if I had to pick my favourite group, it would have to be...

The Outer Senshi - Sailors' Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and eventually Saturn.

Perhaps it was because they were a bit older (Whilst it may seem odd for a gay bloke to worry over perving over underage girls, trust me, it can happen. I'm not sure the Outers really were THAT much older, but they were drawn as such (Saturn excepted, but she was just... weird)

Here the intial three Outer Senshi pose with their weapons of choice, Sailor Uranus (Haruka )with her Space Sword, Sailor Pluto (Setsuna Meioh) with her kick-ass keystaff (with her Garnet Orb set into the top of it)... seriously, if the "Dead Scream" spell power she could activate didn't stop you, then she could still beat the crap out of you with it, and Sailor Neptune (Michiru Kaioh) with her deadly and lethal... um... hand mirror (okay, I know it was the Deep Aqua Mirror which was actually pretty powerful, allowing her to cast her "Submarine Reflection" spell, but compared to the other two it SEEMED a lot less dangerous.

And a classic pose of our two favourite Sailors/lovers. Boy, Ms Naoko really likes drawing legs doesn't she?

Oh, and of course, they had a terrific BGM for their transformations...

And now we enter the evening wear category....

Here is Setsuna is a jazzy little number

And here we have the last of the planetary Senshi to be introduced, Hotaru Tomoe, Sailor Saturn, whose age goes up and down like a yoyo and whose history I will leave for someone with a lot more time than I have, to explain. Suffice to say that she start young in Sailor Moon Super S, is aged to evil adulthood, reverts to a newborn innocent, and then ages up again to teenage for the events of the Sailor Stars series.

Here she is in her most common appearance, about 14 or 15

And her she is in her full costume, as Sailor Saturn, the wielder of the Silence Glaive

She never transforms onscreen in the anime, but there is a short sequence which was unlockable content in a Japan only Sailor Moon video game for the Sega Saturn; "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Super S: Various Emotion"

And the four Outer Senshi together with Sailor Moon herself

Some Chibi Sailor cuteness

And here are ALL the Planetary Sailor Senshi, gathered around an fashioned orrery

Hope you enjoyed! (As these were all published in an

For legality, the cover of Manga 14

Yay BSSM pics~! I am so hoping that the artbooks will get a re-release with the manga. Too bad we can't get the anime re-licensed and released uncut with subs too. ;u;

Thanks for sharing the pics! Even though I love all the characters and have a hard time picking an actual favorite usually, Hotaru and Mako-chan generally steal my heart the most. So glad to see plenty of Hotaru/Saturn in the mix there. ♥

(I wanted to use a Mawaru Penguindrum icon since Ikuhara is directing, but I just had to use something bright and happy instead~.)

The outer senshi always had the best transformation music, followed by the sailor starlights (in all their sex-bending fun).

A bloody shame that we never got to see Sailor Saturn's transformation sequence outside of that one video game. I felt she should have at least gotten one by Stars. :(

I always dug that music. Strangely, when I got it one time some years ago, it was attributed to Gundam...

It took me a very long time before I began to appreciate Takeuchi's art, but once I did there was no going back. The level of detail and her sense of color never fails to floor me.

Sailor Saturn was my favorite--the only reason I even started to buy the manga, because the anime had so little of her--but in later years I have found that Pluto is even more fascinating, because her role and power are even more ambiguous.

I'm excited they'll be reprinting the manga in English (hopefully with finer translations this time around), though I'm disappointed they'll be using the Japanese reprint covers, when they have art like this.

I found I had to pick and choose her art carefully, as whilst these paintings are lovely I found a lot of the pen and ink sketches are too stylised, too fussy and/or zip-a-toned to heck and back.
