Years ago, Thomas Wayne went after Joe Chill, the man who killed his son. He planned to inject him with a syringe of something or other, but at the last moment he changed his mind.

Well...yes and no. I think the fact that we're seeing Thomas actually trying to fix the world so that Bruce can live but also become this driven vigilante is what really helps sell the whole tragedy of the thing. If he just said he was trying to change things, it would have been confusing.
