aeka: (Catwoman [wtf]:)
[personal profile] aeka posting in [community profile] scans_daily
Consistent with previous rumours that TDKR is going the Frank Miller route with Catwoman's origin:

"Catwoman is apparently one of the most well written characters we’ve seen in these movies so far and she could potentially steal the show the way Heath Ledger did last time. She does some cool stuff in the movie like jumping out of windows and stealing the Batpod. Her back story is that she has a history of abuse and works as a stripper and is also a pickpocket."

Source.

Right now I'm taking this with a grain of salt, but there's also mention that the previous image we saw of Anne's Catwoman earlier isn't the full Catwoman costume and that she will wear the cat-eared cowl later on the film.

Thoughts?

I do hope that is the case with how Selina will be handled in Rises, but yeah, grain of salt.

As for the legality pages...never let it be said that Benes won't step up when it comes to the beefcake.

Eh, plenty of completly well adjusted, normal, confident people are strippers. There problem is it's easy to fall into the objectification trap if it's not handled properly. I definatly share your anxiety, but I don't see Nolanverse making Catwoman into senseless cheesecake.

We'll just have to wait and see like you said...

Sorry, let me clarify, it's late and my medication is in full effect so i'm suprised I can form coherent thoughts. The offhanded belief there's something wrong with being a 'sex worker'. Though in truth it's not purely a western thing either.

The horrors of forced prostitution and/or the things those without rights or legal recourse makes it easy to forget that there are sometimes people who do it willingly, and there's nothing particularly wrong with them, and the fact that it's illegal in most states is actually harmful to their wellbeing and safety.

I can't really comment on anything outside of the US having never lived abroad or really researched the subject.

If anyone needs to know anything about empowered female sex workers, there's a very funny Vagina Monologue on the subject.

Sigh, would it be too much to actually have a Batman movie where he's actually the star?

I appreciate the antagonists are more colourful, but there should be more to Batman than reacting to them and growling his lines.

Given the complete lack of super hero movies with female heroes as the star, I welcome this potential news with great anticipation.

Fair point.

Given the apathy the characters in the first movies engendered in me (with the exception of Jim Gordon, and possibly Alfred), I'm hoping SOMEONE emerges with a decent written character, since it's a Batman movie I'd rather it be Batman, but if it ends up being Selina, that'll do.

For me to even be interested in the Nolanverse's Batman/Bruce Wayne, he'd have to be at least a little endearing and not completely bland. He'd also have to stop doing idiotic shit like taking the rap for someone else's murders.

Because I can't see that amazing plan coming back to kick him and Gordon in the balls in TDKR.

I don't see why you think that was idiotic. The central premise of TDK is that Batman is a necessary evil. He keeps the city safe, yes, but if you're relying on a dude in a bat costume to keep your city safe, your city is irrevocably hosed up. That's why from the start of the film, Bruce is trying to get Harvey Dent, a lawyer, to take over his role as protector. When this plan fails, he elevates Harvey and demonizes himself, because even though Batman is a necessary evil, the city should still recognize him as an evil and seek to adhere to the rule of law and move beyond needing him.

Oh no, I understand Batman making that decision, even if his faith in Harvey is misguided, but we've already seen that his identity isn't as airtight as it seems. All it takes is.'Mister Reese' in the media industry taking an interest in why Batman killed those people, and you could guarantee it'll start to unravel.

After all, Batman isn't going to start killing people on the street now, so those five people are going to be a bizarre anomaly. A reporter digs deep enough, and I think it would become apparent that all is not what it seems. And that, I hope, is something that will come up in TDKR, even if it's via Bane.

What better way to ruin a city than to show how their one hope became a murderer.

But the fact is the public doesn't actually know anything about Batman or his methods and motivations. If more gangsters or corrupt cops turn up dead (as they probably will) who's to say that Batman didn't kill them? How can anyone investigate Batman's motives? Maybe Batman's a lunatic, maybe he was a gangster all along taking out the opposition. The point is to make people question, "wait who is this guy exactly and should we even trust him?"

As a smokescreen to hide Dent's actions, I think it's the best they could do, since Batman can basically act guilty and implicate himself.

I don't mind that much. There's been so many different interpretations of Bruce over the years, a sort of blank Batman can allow us to place our own spin on him.

I think they already tried that with Batman Begins. Christian Bale is capable, but I really don't think he's able to capture the dynamic nature of our beloved caped crusader. :(

You mean the same Christopher Nolan with documented and well-known problems with portraying woman in his films!?

Yes, he never does the cheesecake thing. But let's not pretend Catwoman is going to be a developed character. She's probably just going to be an archetype at best.

Good point, but you could argue that in a movie like Inception, all of the characters were simply archetypes and just developed by the talent of their actors. The writing for Ariadne, for example, was just the same as someone like Saito or Arthur, just fulfilling roles. The actors elevated that to the best of their ability. (Sorry, I totally know what you're saying, but I'm right off a huge Nolan high. I live in Pittsburgh and got happily burnt to a crisp yesterday filming in the stadium with him and Tom Hardy (and 15,000 other people!))
