I still don't know why they had to use Azazel.

I don't know WHY but comic book movies seem to love going after the obscure.

Maybe its because to want to appeal more to the hardcore crowd who can smugly say they know that character and their background but who knows.

Look at Hector Hammond from Green Lantern, who the hell would recognize him other than those who have followed GL consistently?

The Green Lantern doesn't have a lot of well-known villains, though, and Hammond has been around since the 60s.

Az only appeared in one arc, which was very unpopular.

Grundy isn't traditionally a Hal Jordan foe, but an Alan Scott one. Sinestro works better if you have him as part of the Corps at first, which gives his fall more impact, rather than have him come out of nowhere as a bad guy. Carol/Star Sapphire also requires setup.

Hector was someone they could use who is a longstanding Hal Jordan foe, just like how Johns used him in Secret Origin. Although they probably could've used Atrocitus or Black Hand, too.

Green Lantern first flight did an excellent job of explaining Sinestro. You're right, Grundy is more of a traditional GL foe but I see them making it work.

Hammond is just such a weak villain...there's really nothing interesting about him at all. I found it a massive waste that they didn't use one of the greatest villains in the DC universe instead.

I agree. But you know how these things work. DC seem to like saving the bigger, better villains until the hero is 'established', in the movies. They did the same with Batman, it's just Liam Neeson as Ra's was a much stronger character/actor than Hector Hammond.

I suppose it's a good thing WB are moving forward with GL2, though. Despite the poor reception of the first, put Mark Strong in the big baddie role and it will rock, since he did as Sinestro.

Because Nightcrawler had one of the coolest scenes in X-2, but they didn't want to use him.
