sherkahn: Monarch from the Venture Brothers (The Monarch)
[personal profile] sherkahn posting in [community profile] scans_daily
It's the middle of August, and that means the solicits for November are beginning to pop up.
Newsarama has solicits for two of their most popular villains.
Doom and Magneto

Oh shit.

From that article:

"We spoke with the team for the exclusive announcement of Magneto's first feature series since 2000's Magneto: Dark Seduction. The solicitation text says Magneto is caught on-camera killing humans. While the creative team couldn't talk much about what this means for his membership with the X-Men, they were able to talk about who he is as a character and tease a few other characters that might be showing up, as well as, for Young, switching sides in a way of his own."

I may wait for trades, but the teams behind these stories are quite capable.

I'm a bit tired of this. I'm glad Rogue, Emma, and Omega Sentinel all became X-Men and stayed that way (minus a virus for poor OS *sad face*). Awesome. They've become amazing characters for it. Danger... well, I like the idea of her as the Mutant Warden. I wouldn't mind seeing her explored some more.

But Sabretooth, Juggernaut, Lady Mastermind, Frenzy, Magneto (a few times, now)...

I'm just not really surprised anymore when some of these more obviously shady characters end up going eveil again. I mean, what did the X-Men honestly expect? Yes, he brought back Kitty. After that? BAM, he's now in on every major meeting and one of the top brass on Utopia. At what point did that seem a wise idea to Scott?

I'm pretty sure it's bait and switch this time, though. If Mags still wants to stay in Utopia, even if for reasons of his own, then even if he let his psychotic side free like this he'd have some very easy ways to make sure he wouldn't be caught on film.

Generally I agree, though.

And here we go to Department of Redundancy Departmen... Bleargh, that could do with about 50% less repetition of words.

I think it's hilarious you could have dropped either sentence without changing the meaning of your comment.

I honestly don't think Mags was ever Psychotic. That's too easy an excuse for him. Personally I like the idea that he, in his own mind, is a good guy and he does bad things for the right reasons. To protect his people so he never again sees loved ones go to the furnaces or locked behind cages just because they are different. Hell even looking at how he treated Wanda/Pietro he was trying to make them stronger.

I'm hoping that he stays with the XMen and this is a bait and switch.

Like I wasn't wearing my 'Magneto was Right' shirt through the entirety of Civil War.

Oh, for the most part he has it under control but he has had moments that make you seriously doubt his sanity. Take Senyaka for an example. Mags executed him, crushed him with his own tentacles, for doing exactly what he would have ordered him to do if he had been present. But he hadn't. So *squish*.

Senyaka got better, but not through any intent on leaving him alive on Magneto's part.

I kind of agree, but the thing is, he'll still do bad things. And I don't think he can ever *stop*. If he has to kill humans, even innocent humans, to save mutant lives he'll do it. No hesitation. He'd not go out of his way to kill humans "just because", but if it's neccessary, or even just convenient, for the interests of mutantkind he'd do it.

I've said this before, but I think that Magneto is a basically well-intentioned person whose very noble motives has lead him into becoming what is almost, but not quite, a horrible villain. Dr. Doom is a person whose horrible and deeply depraved personality has kind of interacted to turn him into something that is occasionally *almost* heroic.

Magneto's concern for others means he can't stop killing. Doom's pride and humongous ego means he can't help but act with a twisted sense of honor.

The solution should be to stop trying to force them into heroic roles, when they know that some writer or editor is going to come along sooner or later and say, "I liked Magneto more as a villain, so a villain he shall be."

It just makes the X-Men look like fucking morons when it happens. And then it happens again.... And again.

"I can't believe he betrayed us!"

Really? I mean... really? I mean, at least Lady M. had a good reason: "I need a place to stay and I want revenge against some enemies we have in common."

Mystique had a redemption run for a while. Though, honestly, Cyclops just needs to have X-Force kill her for good this time.

Sabretooth... yeeeah, that one just never was going to go well. The theory for Rogue was, "If I'm controlling him, then at least we know where he is."

Emma, Rogue, and Omega all had great background stories to support them.

Hell, half the time they've got to contend with loyal X-Men betraying them for various (often mind controlled) reasons. Havok, Gambit, Polaris, Jean Grey, Wolverine... and so on. You'd think it would be slightly more difficult to convince them of your good intentions than, 'hey, I'm good now.'

Carey's first team really took the cake, though. Sabretooth, Omega Sentinel and Lady Mastermind? Oh, and Cable who's often a bit shifty (and turned out to be when the arc led into Messiah Complex) to say the least. Like there weren't enough established X-Men/New Mutants/X-Factor characters for him to choose from without having to dip his hand into the 'supervillains to reform' bucket.
