Greetings True Believers!

Here is a shot of the new uniform from the Cleveland set of the new Avengers movie.

It looks pretty good!

I still miss the wings but I like it.

Ze Legal.

Looks like they're painted on his helmet . . .

Hmm...it reminds me a lot of the spandex version we see of the USO show from this far off--and the whole point of that was to show how ridiculious that costume would look like in real life.

I'll try to wait until we see some professionally done photos of the thing in motion before I really judge it.

No, this looks like someone tried to make a practical suit that will actually work and look decent in real life . . . based on he traditional comic book appearance of Cap's outfit.

Maybe movieverse Cap had a fan following, enough of one that his new costume designer remembers those old USO shows?

Yeah, I get that--it's just tight like it's spandex but it doesn't really look like it, so my brain isn't quite processing it right.

I mean, we all get in superhero comics that most of these guys are wearing protective gear that just happens to look like spandex, but looking at drawings is different from looking at real people.

It doesn't look very tight to me. There's clearly "plating" in some places... it reminds me of kevlar.

I can't even hear people discussing the spandex of superhero costumes without being reminded of the running gag that they had in Power Rangers: RPM about what their costumes are made of, and their creators reaction to the usual assumption.

Dr K is a marvellous character, even moreso when finally revealed.

And when the team finally sits down with their mentor for a Q&A the series REALLY has some fun with it's own conventions and cliches

Personally, I strongly suspect/hope that said custume designer goes by the name Tony and is also still a total fanboy and since he's only supposed to be support for the team gets to do such things as make advanced fabrics and shielding so nobody damages the national icon.

No. Don't you see? If you shoot somone they will have to spend alot of time in bed....reading. It all makes sense.

This is filming pretty close around where I live. My sister recently saw Samuel Jackson. I hope I can find some time to see some action before they leave town.

So lucky. I hope you get to see lots. My hometown isn't *that* far away from the city, but I'm a grad student elsewhere and won't be visiting my parents until the end of the month. They'll probably have left town all together by the time that I'm in the city proper to see the Indians game, knowing my luck with these particular sorts of things.

Well it's nice to have another proud Clevelander/Ohioan around here. From what I've heard on the news and read online, I believe filming wraps up around here on the 2nd of September.

^_^ Good to "see" another Ohioan around here (my grad school is in the state too... just well out of Cleveland). September 2nd, huh? Well, I'm going to be in the city itself for the Indians baseball game a week from Saturday, so maybe I'll luck out and see some sets or something, if not actually any of the stars? ;P If not, I may have to find a good excuse to head back into the city while I'm still about... maybe a nice trip to the West Side Market or something?

I... OMG. I was just checking to see where in Cleveland they're filming. And apparently Cleveland isn't the only place in Ohio on the schedule. They're negotiating something within thirty miles of Cincinnati? ^___^ But it doesn't say when, damn. Or even where? But they're doing shooting in both of the regions of Ohio I have lived in... if the Detroit shooting hadn't been dropped, they would have basically shot within fifty miles or so of every place I have ever lived. Holy shit. I think it's some sort of sign. ;P (not really, but hilariously ironic, and I'm going to have to see this movie many times to ogle Cap... but not Iron Man even though he's awesome, because RDJ very slightly resembles a younger version of my uncles on Mom's side of the family, which is not something I tend to notice in the comics *le sigh*... and possibly Thor, and search for which bits were filmed in Cleveland and Cincinnati!)

There was a scene in Herc where he actually opens his puches. "Rations, basic medecine, water-cleaning pills... What do you know, pouches can be useful!"

From: [personal profile] jlbarnett
Herc would need to make a comment about the size of the rations I think. The size of 90's pouches actually makes them better suited for today's tech than 90's overall

My theory is that Cap was feeling insecure about the Avengers, what with the Norse God and the super-advanced battlesuit and the styling eyepatch, and he was all 'what can I bring to the team?' And the answer was POCKETS. So he has everyone's keys in his pouches, Thor's cellphone, Natasha's tampons, Tony's gum. He feels like an essential part of the dynamic now.

Natasha, Maria and Tony just like being able to rummage in the Captain's pants at will.

As someone who always carries a bookbag/backpack/pouch, I just cannot imagine NOT having something to put things in. It's why I never could see the problem with Batgirl having one aspect of her original costume that was more practical than the guys' costumes (negated somewhat by the heels).

Yes. I can see the practicality of a moderate (*not* "X-Treeeem!") amount of pouches on a superhero uniform, assuming that one establishes what, in fact, they are used for, and shows the wearer actually pulling something useful from one of them once in a blue moon. If you pull your cell phone or keys, or some sort of fancy superhero toy, out of one of them, I won't complain as long as there isn't a ridiculous number of the things. I kind of understand where you, kenn_el, are coming from with the backpack thing... Personally, I nearly always have a purse with me when I leave home, for my wallet/cellphone/keys/etc. It's not a terribly large one, as these things go, although there are certainly smaller ones out there, and it's actually the sort of shoulder bag that could stand a chance in hell of being marketed as a murse if the manufacturer wanted to go that route (I'm pretty sure they don't want), but it certainly serves its purpose.

I love Barbara's bat-purse. I can just imagine her painting the little symbol on it.

(The heels, I suppose, make sense when you consider that is was originally just a costume, albeit a ridiculously accurate one. At that point you could say she realised she could fight and run well in them, and take advantage of underestimation and pointiness.)

I wish they would've just directly lifted the Hitch designed Ultimate Cap costume. Seems like there's too much Blue and way too much spandex giving it a cosplay feel.

I'm not crazy about the costume, but I don't hate it either. On the other hand I always have to remind myself that this stuff always looks better on the silver screen so I'm hoping that it looks really sweet once the Avengers movie comes out.

It still amazes me that this movie is happening. I don't know why.

But actually I am pretty impressed with the costume. It still looks like Captain America but not too cheesy.

1) I can see how Tony would have wanted to streamline the armoring and utility of the uniform into something more modern and 2) may have only ever had the USO newsreels etc. to work from. But probably not.

Eh. I can see why they went away from the other movie's design to this one. Progression, change in style/motif, more action figure options...

*makes grabby hands* They're filming in Cleveland. Squee. My mom said so on the phone last week, but she didn't know which actors were there, all she said was that traffic was messed up, and she was pretty sure there were supposed to be maybe three of the big names but only one of them (Samuel L. Jackson, I'm pretty sure) had been spotted so far. OMG I suddenly wish I was visiting my parents this coming weekend rather than next weekend. Because my hometown is near there, and... maybe they'll still be filming when we go to the Indians game at the end of the month? Though I certainly won't see Chris Evans or any of the other big names either way I'm sure, but maybe I could luck out and see something at least? When this movie comes out, I'm going to have to see it multiple times, in order to fully perv on the hot guys and also search for which bits were filmed in Cleveland.

Yeah, I miss the wings, but I like the overall look of this. It's really hard to make superhero costumes look good in live-action movies, so when they can make them look decent, I'm happy. :)
