Poor Oya (Idie).... there are so many reasons this happened... how it could have been different. But honestly i think we ALL saw this coming. It's not her fault, it's not Cyclops' fault, its not even Wolverine's fault (Even though he did as he usually does and left to go cool off in some bar). Its really everyone's fault. She save the lives of the x-men and over 100 civilians... but she lost so much....

I won't lie, I would totally read the series of formulaic yet oddly charming adventure books for young readers starring that youthful Inner Circle.

Second thought on this... there's a slave trade to the stars? Now I'm wondering how many humans a year, are the alien races setting up their own breeding populations, what they go for, what the aliens pay in and how this family converts the proceeds into Earth currency, how they're transported, all of that stuff.

Anyway, sounds like a job for a joint SWORD/Annihilators task force, doesn't it?

With Lisa Cheney helping out with the transportation; IIRC she has a particular loathing for slave traders, since she was sold into interstellar slavery as a child.

Also makes me think of the "Children of Earth" Torchwood series. (I may have hated the series, but the premise was very disturbing and very effective)

Huh, reminds me of a short story I wrote YEARS ago, where in the future overpopulation becomes so bad that governments and corperations go along with it under the guise of a "interstellar colonisation" program they have organised with a race of aliens they've encountered, as to them it's more beneficial than going to war against other humans for space as they can actually get a lot more back in technology and resources instead of just killing each other.

I'm not entirely convinced by the Hellfire Cadets I'm afraid, trying too hard to appear EEEEEEEVIL (based on what's seen here) I think.

They also make me think of this song by Danny Elfman, as part of a musical, "Little Demons", that he never made.

Regarding the female Hellfire Cadet in the scans behind the link: maybe I'm just desensitized somewhat to violence against people, but as soon as animal abuse enters the equation, I want the character to die horribly and quickly.

This is one of the reasons I can't watch "Dexter", since it was one of his childhood hobbies.

Most humans take more issue with animal cruelty than human cruelty, unless the humans being harmed are infants. It's a typical psychological reaction.

So Cloud 9 kills a bunch of Neo-Nazis bent on killing everything in sight in Avengers Academy, and it's treated as both a harsh rite of passage and a loss of Cloud 9's personal innocence. Oya kills a bunch of foot soldiers bent on killing everything in sight here, and it's treated as the straw that broke the camel's back for the X-Men?

Can't say I buy this. Especially coming from Logan.

now here is where i can disagree. Wolverine himself does not shy away from killing. He will not hesitate to kill if he has to. But wolverine has ALWAYS had a soft spot in his heart for youn innocents. He has tried to Keep "Kids as kids" for as long as he could. he did not like when Scott put Laura on X-Force. He tried to protect both Kitty and Jubilee as long as he could (yes he threatened to kill Pixie, but she made him see unicorns:)

I'd like to stress that the words Scott said to Idie were: "You do what you feel you have to."

Now, one could see this statement as an order to kill, but IMO this was the most ethically sensible thing he could have said.
Logan's "GET OUT OF THERE" is just patronizing...

And I don't buy Wolverine's reaction to all of this. He is worried about turning teenagers into killers and yet he doesn't try to stop Laura or Hope from doing what they have been trained to do. It's totally inconsistent to his character.

I think I'm also in agreement with a comment up in Newsarama, Idie just... doesn't seem an important or well known enough character to build something as fundamental as "Schism" appears to be around. I don't know her, I don't know what she stands for, what her background is, and unless you've been reading Generation Hope, there's not really a lot of chance to have done so.

I fucking knew it. From issue 1 I had a feeling that the big catalyst of the schism will involve the kids. Wolverine is against them being used as soldiers while Cyclops clearly believes that they can't be naive to the real world and need to be ready to fight. This is interesting for me. A clash of ideas that leads to violence. Sure it's not the first time to happen, but doesn't make it any less intriguing here.

Some of this reminds me of a line from, of all things, the John Travolta movie "Broken Arrow."

"I just realized something. I never actually killed anyone before. I mean, I dropped bombs on Baghdad, but, uh... never face to face. ... I don't know what the big deal is. I really don't."

Idie going from zero to sociopath seems to be that line exactly.

A fair number of senior X-Men have had to take lives to save others and it would make sense to me that they form a plan to counsel Idie individually. Storm, Wolverine, Emma, Colossus (anyone else?) - I think one-on-one ongoing counseling would be the way to go (particularly from anyone who isn't Wolverine). I think it would help Idie put her actions into perspective sooner rather than later and would be a welcome relief from the "young-mutants-turned-GrimDark-because-of-PTSD" trope that's already been done.

Warlock recently killed a large number of the Right's troopers on Cypher's recommendation during whatever the future Sentinel assault on Utopia was called. He was NOT happy about it, but felt it was the only way to save lives.
