Greetings True Believers!

Here are a few scans from Avengers #16. The Avengers visit the confessional booth to talk about Cap.

They embrace a theory I've held myself for quite awhile.

Enjoy!

Cap is mourning Bucky and the others react to it.

I've long believed that Steve is the Avatar of America. One Out of Many.

couldn't even put them in a round table. Or in front of a flashback panel

What's really striking is how Bendis can't be bothered to make his essay sound like the actual views of any of the actual characters whose mouths his opinions are coming out of.

Maybe I should start copy-pasting my posts here into word bubbles over Hawkeye's head, I bet that'd give them like, +100 credibilitudes.

Hahaha, A+

I don't dislike the concept of the talking heads, but I do think they need tighter characterisation and better art to pull them off. Especially Clint and Maria seem unlike themselves here.

I think Maria's off both visually and in terms of her written personality, here. I think they've cut off what was the most interesting point of her character by having her be actively friendly with the Avengers, now. Here, she's just crawling up Steve's butt with the rest of the team.

I'm not saying I want her back to the Millar characterisation at all, hut since Siege, she's lost a lot of her edge.

I very much liked her as a fierce, brave, principled asshole who doubted the usefulness of superhero teams and wasn't afraid to express it. It's not a character type we see often with women.

I wouldn't mind her softening towards them over time, but it doesn't seem like character development or growth so much as just an arbitrary change.

This. I'm not saying that I dislike the superheroes of the MU, but it was nice to have someone who presented a different perspective to them and at least thought they should be held accountable.

But, well, leave it to Fraction to have her be another casualty of Tony Stark's libido. I don't know how he can do such good work with one character and screw another up so badly.

I don't know that I blame Fraction (for a change); even after sleeping with him, she was still abrasive and aggressive - like the issue where she walked out on Tony's excuses. And I liked her in Siege - when she went out to rescue Thor from about fifteen supervillains.

IDK, it just seems like Bendis is writing her so differently, which is odd, as didn't create her in in New Avengers?

Even earlier. Bendis introduced her in Secret War at the same time he removed Fury from power.

Oh yes, of course. It's weird, she's so different here from how he used to write her.

Reminds me of Jessica Jones.

The thing is, Jess actually had something in the way of character development to get to where she is. There's a fairly straight line to her appearances, but I think the development of her relationship with Cage, having her baby and then having to raise her baby in the tumultuous Marvel Universe, I think that was well done.

Hill has had none of that. Her animosity with Steve is pretty much nonexistent, and by rights, nearly all the current Avengers should hate her, which would actually make things interesting. Instead, she gets lumped alongside Victoria Hand and is playing best mates with the team she once used pretty brutally to gain information on M-day.

Thanks, I'm pretty amazed how well all that slotted in there.

As someone else said, Guardians of the Galaxy did this pretty well.

Especially Clint and Maria seem unlike themselves here.

I can't get past Tony using crazy as a noun.

Bendises gonna Bendis, I guess.

Maybe just all the ones who aren't best pals with techno-organic alien mutants.
