I liked an awful lot of it, but I thought that there were some elements that were a touch too "Morrison" for my tastes, and James Jr's entire character rubs me the wrong way. From the fact that he's clearly DEXTER inspired to his diagnoses of "psychosis" being completely wrong for the way he's written to the way it alters/stains the emotional power of Batman: Year One's ending to the fact that his ultimate plan 1.) makes NO sense, because the drugs won't have life-long effects on anybody if they stopped working for him after he stopped taking them, and 2.) it was kind of already done, and done better, in Batman: Jekyll & Hyde.

And yet, there's so much else of the story which I utterly loved, from the character interactions to the use of both artists for mood and atmosphere to the way he built up the legacy of Gotham and the rogues at the start. He played with a sense of history rather than just plow forward with his own history like Morrison does, and I appreciated that an awful lot. My enjoyment of that makes me extra super critical of the rest, because I just hold it up to that higher standard, y'know?
