Actually having her comment on how cliché it is, really does bugger all to improve the tediously obvious fridgie-ness of the moment.

Actually I think it's worse. They knew they were doing it and were too damn lazy to think of anything else.

Agreed. It even seems like Snyder commenting about the plotline he was given, but I can't cast aspersions. For all we know, he helped co-plot this, as Azzarello helped co-plot Flashpoint: Batman with Johns.

i don't think its much aspersions.... judging from Synder's writing... this does not seem like something HE would want to do...

I don't think he's a perfect writer by any means--god, how I wish I had less of a life right now so I could devote a couple days to composing a detailed analysis of The Black Mirror--but he's a much better writer than the kind I'd expect to use this kind of story development. So yeah, until proven otherwise, I choose to believe that he was at least *trying* to comment on the plot.

I liked an awful lot of it, but I thought that there were some elements that were a touch too "Morrison" for my tastes, and James Jr's entire character rubs me the wrong way. From the fact that he's clearly DEXTER inspired to his diagnoses of "psychosis" being completely wrong for the way he's written to the way it alters/stains the emotional power of Batman: Year One's ending to the fact that his ultimate plan 1.) makes NO sense, because the drugs won't have life-long effects on anybody if they stopped working for him after he stopped taking them, and 2.) it was kind of already done, and done better, in Batman: Jekyll & Hyde.

And yet, there's so much else of the story which I utterly loved, from the character interactions to the use of both artists for mood and atmosphere to the way he built up the legacy of Gotham and the rogues at the start. He played with a sense of history rather than just plow forward with his own history like Morrison does, and I appreciated that an awful lot. My enjoyment of that makes me extra super critical of the rest, because I just hold it up to that higher standard, y'know?

I suppose, however I have never read Jekyll amd hyde, or year one... So I kinda liked James Jr. as a villain.... So... Yeah the negatives are lost on me. I actually loved the way he wrote. All the characters, loved barbara fighting back. I thought James as a foil to dick was great

J&H is a terrible comic. But a GLORIOUSLY terrible comic. I'm working on a review of that. It's so bad! And yet, the big "drive swaths of Gotham irreversibly insane" plan was actually handled better/more sensibly there. Seriously, no children should be driven as insane as James Jr. because of the drugs! Medication does not work that way! I get what you're trying to do, Snyder, and gold star for effort, but fail!

I also hated the reveal of James Jr's true nature, with the old childhood "friend." That whole thing should have been cut out, so you could have kept the mounting tension and dread through the Joker, and the key, and Barbara, and finally Babs in the watchtower. All the tension was kneecapped for me in that sloppy, crass, pointlessly graphic reveal, which had all the emotional impact of a wet sock being dropped.

Hmmm actually, I liked the "old friend scene" it was graphic yes... But imho it was graphic done right. It was a major WTF moment that worked.... Though... The scene with barbara sr could have worked too... But I liked the fact that the audience knew before everyone else (except barbara jr that is)

Snyder didn't script this (or the previous issues). Lowell Francis did.

What? Oh, I could have sworn that this was Snyder's book.

Snyder co-plotted. Francis scripted it. Snyder was originally listed as the sole writer, so that might explain the confusion. He lessened his role because he had too much on his plate.

im torn.... its definately a text book fridge... but... now i don't want to say it's better... but there are two things that... ugh... this is hard... takes the "sting" out of it... 1) She comments on how cliched it is.... 2) she tells him "Don't do it because of me. Do it because it's the right thing to do..."

knowing snyder's writing... i think its more like:
Editorial: Okay... Kill Lois....
Synder:.... 0_o....are you...?. *Sigh* okay fine.... *Writes fourth wall breaking Lois*
