Blue Beetle #31: Mama Reyes is Awesome, Part Infinity

So, over in the Flashpoint #5 final pages post a mini-discussion of comicbook moms broke out in the comments. Talk naturally turned to the awesomeness of the Reyes clan and Jaime's mom Bianca Reyes in particular. Oh, the usual suspects were trotted out - "Is. That. A giant. Green. FIST?", "*sniffle* Kick their asses." - and I mentioned that time Bianca took down superpowered thugs with an MRI machine. Response? SCANS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN.



Three pages from Blue Beetle #31. A gang of superpowered teens upset about recent immigration crackdowns fought Blue in #30, and some of the thugs were injured, maybe killed, leaving Blue asking what to do now? Answer: Take them to the hospital. We open on a triage team including Bianca meeting the dropped off thugs at the ER door; their superpowers make getting accurate readings impossible, and from off-side, DR. MID-NITE!!!! of the JSA commands, "Bring them to ME," because as the issue's guest-star he needs a defined role.



But it's not Blue who's going to blow up the hospital...



OH NO YOU DI'INT.

Beetle and Mid-Nite join the fray and there's a couple pages of fighting, with a side order of innocent bystander injuries.

Bianca Reyes is awesome and I really hope they don't decide on rebooting Jaime with a secret identity.

To be honest, I don't know much about Blue Beetle (everything I've read and heard suggests I should rectify that, like, yesterday but I just can't find the time) but man, I seriously hope that blonde douchebag gets what's coming to him.

And oh yes, if this is anything to go by, Mama Blue Beetle is made of seven shades of win.

When born, all babies need to be issued a blanket, a pacifier, and at least one Blue Beetle trade. That we do not already have this policy in place reflects our general failure as a civilization. Humanity, I want you to go home and think about your mistake.

It's not just mama beetle, although she effortlessly intimidates both armed bruisers and beligerent green lanterns.

The /entire/ supporting cast is severely awesome. Up to and including his pre-teen sister.

I haz a happy :) god she is awesome :D there were times that book made me laugh, made me cheer and yes, made me cry. Jaimie remembering his missing year, bianca in... Well everything, (big needle is my fave, followed by fist, now magnets) then "No, you DON'T get to say her name" and that final issue where EVERY DAMN CHARACTER got CMoA!

Not only Mrs. Reyes, but the rest of the clan are all made of solid awesome. Seriously, they're one of my favorite superhero family & friends in all of comics, which is why it's a shame that apparently, Jaime's keeping his identity a secret from his family & friends. (If a recent interview with Tony Bedard, the guy who's writing the DCnU Beetle, is to be believed.)

eh its kinda vague, it says he won't be able to tell everyone, won't mean his family, won't be in the know (if you think about it LOTS of people knew who he was.) La Dama, and everyone who worked for her, the street metas, his family, peace maker, the JLI, the titans... LOTS of people

Aw, this part makes me super sad:

I hate this mindset. "making sure he doesn't catch a break". Gah. No. :(

True it is a little sad. But it does provide an interesting alternative since Jaime's series kinda had his secret identity be a rather easy thing in his series since his family friends and even some villains like La Dama and the Reach knew Jaime was Beetle. So we can see what his world would've been like if things were a little less goofy and a much more serious thing like an alien invasion would be. Admittedly I'd still like the goofy better but it makes for an interesting look into how it would've been.

it's less the "can't tell too many people his secret ID" that bothers me than the whole "dogpile on the wabbit" feeling I get from "can't catch a break" But time will tell ^.^;;

Uh, DC, if I wanted to read about a teenager/young man who had super-angst, social awkwardness, rotten luck, never caught a break, and family problems because of his dual life as a bug-themed superhero, I'd go and read frickin SPIDER-MAN!

DAMN YOU PERLETWO! you made me search through the old scans looking up lots of the BB posts (heh you did lots:) and i started reading the ones about the missing year.... made me cry again.... oh so much awesomeness in that series. i can't wait for him to come back and hope that atleast a portion of that awesomeness translates over :((((

I can learn to accept Barbara Gordon as Batgirl. I can bend my brain around an assembly line of (male) Robins. I can even handle Wonder Woman going back to her old status quo bathing suit from the FORTIES outfit. These are things I can live with. I might not be fully on board with them, but they're not the end of the world.

But I will say this:

BIANCA REYES BETTER BE IN THE DCnU WITH A FULL CHAMBER OF WHUPASS, OR SOMEBODY'S GONNA GET HURT!

Hmm. DC Database says Blue Beetle vol. 2 #31 is dated November 2008. It's part 3 of a 4 part arc having to do with immigration, hapless teen superheroes as political pawns, and a new Dr. Polaris.

My theory is that she and Berto are close in age, but wartime service and the shooting that left him permanently lame (literally lame as in the leg, modly ones) put some miles on his appearance.

So hoping that the new writer won't screw them up and turn them into more clueless parents who bitch at their super-hero son because they don't realize he just saved the world instead of mowing the lawn. One sad-sack hero with a secret identity that makes everyone think he's a terminally late loser is enough. *cough peter parker cough*

The article comments do not make me optimistic in that regard. :(

The entire Reyes family is made of awesome. There better be more of this in the dcnu, or I will be very pissed. That is all. Except for this: that whispering panel, second last on the first page, is pure adorableness.
