I guess I'm a bit of a comedy snob. I like a joke to actually have a premise that makes sense and a punchline. Even when you get into absurdist comedy, the absurdity becomes the premise.

But with these the premise is that they're motivational posters. I get that. And the first demotivators were actual parodies of motivational posters. You might have art of Sisyphus rolling a boulder up a hill and something ironic about perseverance as the caption. They played to the premise.

So the premise of these is that they're motivational posters except most of them have nothing to do with motivation.

They're motivational posters in format, if not in essence. Sort of like a relaunch where all your favorite characters still exist, they just don't act like themselves, but funnier.

No, it's more like a relaunch where instead of a comic book it's prose. But still marketed as a comic book with comic book trade dress. But it's not a comic book.

I just think of them as captioned pictures, as most of them, as you point out, clearly aren't anything to do with motivational posters.

I see your point but it's not something that bugs me because I consider demotivators a sub-meme/genre of the motivational posters.

I'd separate them if I was getting graded but since it's all for the lulz, I roll with it.
