Four pages from ACTION COMICS 1 (heh, feels weird to say that)...

The first page of the issue:

This Glenmorgan guy is described by the cops as "Mr. Metropolis," very, very rich and powerful. The police arrive to rescue him from Superman.

With Lex Luthor's help, the authorities manage to lure Superman into a trap.

heh, he really IS Tom Joad as Superman... "If you need me I'll be around"

though that whole Rats with money thing seemed a bit... batman-ish... not bad... just... strange (its not like he never said anything similar... and it does sound like something a Young Clark kent would say...)

If this keeps for long enough, it's going to be just as weird to say Detective Comics #27.

I like this. He's not trusted at first by the government, but he's already earning the people's respects. A bit cocky, still learning, but obviously experience'll change that.

So Superman is a fascist now.

Guess that's why there's no Authority in the DCU. It'd be redundant.

Weird fact: had to google 'Teetotal' to know what it meant.

I now keep expecting Grant Morrisson to jump up behind me with a 'The more you know' banner...

This looks good. Very reminiscent of Golden Age Superman.

One thing that I hope gets explored is Superman's motivations. If the interviews from creators are true and we've got a Superman who feels more alienated from the world than before, then we're going to need to know why he does what he does.

Superman's motivations have always been interesting to explore anyway, but it becomes more necessary to look at them when we have a guy seeking to protect and serve a species that he does not feel a part of.

I am really digging this. Not just because of the throwback to golden age Supes but also because at this age Superman seems to be the average kid in the middle or right out of college. You know, well meaning but utterly convinced that all the words problems could be solved if the right people only had the means to cut through the BS.

This Superman has the power, his heart is in the right place, and because I know of his character I can enjoy his youthful cockiness for what it is. I know he is eventually going to fail, be hurt, and discover the awful truth of just how complex the real world is but I am not looking to the moment of him getting comeuppance with glee. I feel more like a parent trying to enjoy his child's youthful wonder and uncomplicated joy while it last.

I guess this is okay. I can handle him being kind of cocky because he's young and starting out. As long as it's not full of angst-ridden bullshit about him feeling like an alone alien, and it's not full of assholes who don't like him despite him saving the day, which it doesn't look like it is.

1. I love the art, especially the scene with him speeding on the street with the person on the Blackberry.

2. I'm guessing they're going with the "Superman can be hurt by burst shells" power-level again?

I'm interested anyway, seems good albeit sort of Spider-manish

Here's what I'm wondering. Will this Superman become the Superman in personality that we know and love (a Superman which Morrison already wrote in All-Star Superman), or is the first issue of Justice League an indication that Superman is now kind of a smirking dick?

I know that this is supposedly a Superman who doesn't have the moral and ethical guidance of the Kents, but that's kind of bullshit, because that's what they were even in the original Golden Age origin where they died. I don't so much mind all the costume changes and stuff as long as he's still Superman in personality, but I'm not sure how they'll get there from here. Or worse, if they care, since JL basically read like Hal and Batman trying to out-dick each other, so maybe that's what DC wants out of their superheroes today.

Eh, it's a first issue. We'll see where it goes. I'm not a Morrison fan, but in this regard, I have a bit more faith in him than most other writers when it comes to Superman.

I really like the art and cocky clark is fun. I hope he grow out of it but for right now in his early years. I'm enjoying his personality.

Never has Supes looked so dreamy. Fun, but the bitterness that this'll be the future still puts me off it.

There are things I like about this, but on the whole, I can't say I approve. Even when Superman does things like drop people off of buildings, he shouldn't come across like he enjoys it. This version does. He's a bully who targets other bullies. If I wanted that, I'd read the Punisher.

I really hope that this is treated as a learning experience, and that he doesn't pull shit like this in the present.

Horrible Morrison dialogue was horrible, the story was bland and so-so.

The art was nice, and the panel lay out gave a great sense of pacing. That's about it.

I'm intrigued. If I were attached to the Superman mythos the way I am to the Batmythos, I would probably be having fits over this, but not gonna lie: it looks interesting. I'm more interested in this Superman than in preboot Superman.

So how inspired by this Supes was Ollie?

I loved this. And if I get the hints correctly, it looks like Morrison's setting up a Superman/Luthor conflict that revolves around the idea of Lex being an Ayn Randian industrialist rich guy and Superman as the ultimate socialist fighting for the poor. Though not entirely new, that would be a really wild take on these two to explore.

My initial response to this - seeing Superman as young, idealistic and reckless - is really quite positive.
